#BlogTour, #BookReview and #Giveaway--> Ratgirl: Song of the Viper by Gayle C. Krause

Book & Author details:
Title and Author: Ratgirl: Song of the Viper by Gayle C. Krause
Publication date: January, 2014
Genres: Dystopia, Young Adult

Synopsis:
Sixteen-year-old streetwise orphan, Jax Stone is an expert at surviving in a dangerous city, where rats rival the homeless for food and shelter, but she’s an amateur at fighting the immoral mayor when he kidnaps her little brother. Desperation demands she quickly master the role of courageous opponent. She uses her hypnotic singing voice to lead rats to their death, and all the children to safety, in a dying city cursed by the deadly sun.

I am new to the Dystopia genre and so when I took up this book, I was a bit skeptical whether I would like it or not. But once I started reading I could not stop till I had finished the book.

The whole futuristic world where the sun has gone deadly and where people come out only at night was something that was totally new and very admirably brought to life by Gayle in the book. Not once does the setup look fake or unrealistic.

A graduate of the University of California, Santa Cruz, and Northwestern University, she has earned READERS’ FAVORITE 5 STARS and been an ORANGE ROSE AWARD finalist. Welcome to Njkinny's World of Books, Lorrie!
I am so happy to have you for virtual coffee. Lets grab our mugs and start this interview. :)

Q1. Tell me something about yourself.
I’m the author of a Western historical romance trilogy, contemporary romantic suspense novels, and sci-fi/paranormal romantic suspense novels. A graduate of the University of California, Santa Cruz, and Northwestern University, I’ve earned READERS’ FAVORITE 5 STARS and been an ORANGE ROSE AWARD finalist. I’ve been a Renaissance nominee for Teacher of the Year, and a summer ranch hand at (California) Disneyland’s Circle D Ranch (caring for the horses that pull the Main Street streetcars, the castle moat swans, and the Jungle Cruise cockatoo – yes, he’s real!). I was on the television game show Jeopardy! and did pretty well, thanks to my knowledge of random, useless stuff.  I love travel, writing, movies, kids and animals, and, of course, books! My family and I live in Southern California.

#BookReview--> Terms of Surrender by Lorrie Farrelly

  • Paperback: 346 pages

  • Publisher: CreateSpace Independent Publishing Platform (August 11, 2010)

  • Language: English

  • Genre: Historical Fiction, Western Romance
  •
    My Review:
Set in the period post the Civil War, Terms of Surrender poignantly narrates the story of Michael Cantrell, the young, brave and now emotionally battered young Captain who lost everything during the war including his family, his home and his peace of mind.

Ever since he has wandered trying to run away from his guilt (What's the guilt about, is for you to read and discover from the book), sadness and his hopelessness of never finding the solace of a home and love of someone he could care about!

Then one day he comes across a scene of  life and death which horrifies him as well as brings forth his protective instincts. He saves the day but is also horribly wounded.

Annie Devlin is desperately trying to prevent the evil rancher Colonel Randolf from acquiring her land just as he has acquired the other neighboring ranches. But what she doesn't predict is being waylaid by his thugs one day and getting almost killed. Saved by the stranger (Michael) who gets heavily wounded during the fight, she nurses him to health.

Although saved this once, what will she do the next time they come?
Can she save her land from the greedy paws of the Colonel?

Michael knows he cant stay forever but he will surely repay this fine lady by doing everything in his power to help her save her home. The only problem is that seeing her makes him hopeful of a home and a life of love which he knows deep down in his heart he is no longer capable of!

Will he ever find a home again?
Can he dare hope of having a life with Annie?
Will his presence be enough to save her house and protect Annie and her brother from harm?

A touching and poignant story of a man who lost everything serving his country in war.

"Gone forever was his innocence and hope for the future, but unwavering courage, loyalty, and duty -always duty- remained. It was all he had left to believe in, and it sustained what small, caring part of him remained."

I was deeply affected by the plight of the soldiers in war who have meager facilities and often die due to lack of attention. These are the people who fight for the safety of their country and its people. Fearless and undaunted by their hardships they are ready to fight till their last breath.Lorrie beautifully and sensitively paints a picture of the war which leaves behind only destruction and broken hearts. Her descriptions of the plight of the soldiers who see their fellow mates dying because they don't have proper rations was hard hitting and left me misty eyed.

"He had seen death far too many times not to recognize it now. Henry was no more than a boy, and now he would grow no older."

The characters are admirably and very expertly sketched and developed. They take the reader along with them to their world where he is able to feel each and every of their emotions and also empathize with them.
Michael has known only loss and fears having anymore losses on his conscience.

Annie is a strong woman who took up the hard and toiling work of looking after her vast ranch as well as the care of her younger brother after her father's brutal murder four years ago. She has known only one home and is determined to keep it, whatever the consequences. Both these characters have seen much sadness and misery and so when they meet its both lovely and so touching. The chemistry between Annie and Michael is sweltering hot and sensuous. I also loved the camaraderie between Annie's younger bother, Rob and Michael. People who are strong and determined to live their life fully despite the hardships, it was interesting to see how it all panned out. I could be seen reading with cent percent attention and swiftly turning pages with monosyllables for answer to any question anyone asked while I read this book. So engrossed was I in the story. :)

Lorrie has done her homework and she successfully gives us a plot that has been beautifully sketched in the Civil war times. I was able to visualize each and every scenario irrespective of the fact that the Civil war happened more than a hundred years ago!

The story is fast paced and with plenty of twists and turns to keep the reader interested and glued to his seat. Whenever I thought I had the story figured out, Lorrie threw a new twist and left me feeling awed.

All in all, a very beautifully written historical romance that will awe and wow you. I highly recommend Terms of Surrender and give it a 4.5 out of 5. Kudos to Lorrie for writing such a sweet and totally endearing story.

Did you know that Terms of Surrender was the finalist for the "Orange Rose Award"
In my opinion, it totally deserved it. :)

Great book and first in the three "Terms" book series, this is a must read.

I received this book as a gift from the author to read and review and I am very thankful to her for introducing me to such an endearing book. The above review is my honest and unbiased opinion and in no way influenced.

Book Review: Cowboy Cafe #3- Cowboy With A Cause by Carla Cassidy

Title and Author: Cowboy with a Cause (Cowboy Cafe #3) by Carla Cassidy
Series: Cowboy Cafe #3
Print Length: 281 pages
Publisher: Harlequin Romantic Suspense (April 1, 2013)
Language: English
Genre: Romance, Suspense, Series, Cowboys, Harlequin
  • Book Review:
  • Cowboy with a Cause is the third book in Carla Cassidy's Cowboy Cafe series and features Adam Benson and Melanie Brooks.

Coping from a tragic past and striving to stay sober, Adam Benson is on a lookout for a place to stay when he comes across the only house with a vacancy.

Melanie Brooks had come to the small town of Grady gulch from New York to nurse her ailing mother but after her mother's death and an accident she is now confined to a wheelchair with all her dreams of becoming a dancer shattered.

She is forced to rent rooms in her house and is at first somewhat reluctant to rent it to Adam Benson, owing to his bad reputation.

Both these people are trying to come to terms with their losses and as they get to know each other, there develops a soothing companionship between them. They are attracted to each other but each has a reason to deny that attraction.

But can they deny this budding attraction between them and carry on a professional relationship?

Misplaced household items and mysterious phone calls create an eerie and suspenseful atmosphere for Melanie who is suddenly left suspecting her sanity and feels that the medicines that she is taking are making her forgetful or worse, mad!

"She didn't remember doing any of those things, but that didn't mean she hadn't done them...Had the pain pills addled her mind...or maybe it hadn't been the pain pills at all...now she had a new possibility.

Maybe she was going insane."

With the scare of a serial killer running loose in town after killing two respected women and with almost zero clues for the police, the small town of Grady Gulch is the center of great activity and gossip.

For people like me who read this book first not knowing that it was part of a series, I didn't feel like I had missed something but still it would be better if you read the books in order as I am going to do now.

The characters are very well introduced and developed. They are normal people and I could relate with them. All their trials and tribulations are normal and even if one has not faced similar situations one can still empathize with them.

"Sometimes you just had to adjust your expectations of the way you thought your life should go and grab onto happiness wherever and whenever it could be found."

The suspense and mystery part along with the slow but sweet romance between Adam and Melanie was very entertaining and had me eagerly turning pages to know more!

A sweet love story with a mysterious twist to it, I loved and adored everything about this book and give Cowboy with a Cause 4 out of 5. I  am now all set to read the other books in the series and finally unravel all the secrets and suspense that are making the people of this small town uneasy and suspicious of each other.
A strong recommendation that you read this page turner romantic suspense as well as the whole series by Carla Cassidy.
