#MovieReview: Talvar ~ A frank and engaging revisit to India's Most Controversial Murder Case!

Source

Talvar movie releases on 2nd October and I had the good fortune of watching it first at a special screening organized for a chosen few..

This movie takes us back to the horrifying double murder of 2008 in Delhi, India of a young girl and the male servant of the house that created quite a buzz in the country with its many layers of mystery and new discoveries made each day that still remained insufficient to bring this case to a satisfactory closure. The parents of the murdered girl, Aarushi were ultimately sentenced to life imprisonment based on evidence procured by the Police despite their many claims at innocence.

Directed by Meghna Gulzar, the movie recreates the investigation and has a tight plot. The screenplay is crisp, engaging and had me engrossed right till the end. It is clear right from the start that the movie plot has been well researched to give the true facts about the crime.

All the actors play their parts to perfection. No one actor can be said to be better than the other. Irrfan Khan plays the role of the investigating officer with conviction and had me following him in his investigation of the case.

Konkona and Neeraj play Nupur and Rajesh Talwar (here as Nupur and Rajesh Tandon) realistically and were able to elicit the proper emotions from the audience. Sometimes I felt empathetic towards them, feeling their pain at losing their only daughter and at other times, I felt like they were hiding something and maybe they were the real murderers.

Sumit Gulati playing the role of Kanhaiya, Rajesh Talwar’s compounder and another suspect in the murder case played his role most convincingly and I could visualize the real Kanhaiya in him who had been suspected of the crime with his shady movements and later revealed motives in the case.

The actor playing Hemraj brought the real Hemraj to life who is still an enigma to everyone. Was he a loyal servant and a sincere man? Or was he the characterless person portrayed in the news?
The girl playing Aarushi (here Shruti Tandon) does well and despite not having many scenes is convincing and brought the mysterious Aarushi to life on the screen.

A young, bubbly girl with no care in the world, comfortable in her life as a sole child to doting parents and with the usual daily routine of any normal teenager, she would never have guessed that she would die and like this. Still an enigma, this movie is a brave attempt to give us a clearer picture of the girl and her murder.

The surname of the family has been changed from Talwar to Tandon in this movie and Aarushi Talwar is Shruti Tandon here to give the movie a somewhat fictional touch.

All in all, Talvar is an engaging, beautifully presented movie that at times made me feel like I was experiencing the reality rather than watching a movie! 4 stars out of 5 to it from me.

It can be watched with family and friends. I loved watching and revisiting this case again and recommend the movie to everyone. The movie will interest everyone irrespective of whether you have followed the case on TV or not.

What do you think about this film? Do share your thoughts with me. I love hearing from you.

Book Review: Romantic Bouncers by Ram Vignesh

Title and Author: Romantic Bouncers by Ram Vignesh
No. of Pages: 259
Publication Date: Notion Press (May 2015)
Genre: Contemporary Fiction, Romance, Indian Writing, Indian Author
Language: English

Book Review:

Romantic Bouncers by Ram Vignesh had me confused a little at the start. I was unable to decide if this was a story about cricket or about a romance or something else entirely. But when I started the book, I was pleasantly surprised. Ram gives the readers a story that has a little of everything. His writing style is simple, engaging and fluid.

The cover the attractive and the blurb is intriguing that had me picking up this book to read.

The plot is commonplace but it is the execution that lends it a unique touch. The author manages to separate his book from the other Indian romance novels flooding the market.

The characters are realistic and people I could connect with. Rabin's interest in Cricket will make every Indian instantly connect with him because we all love this sport! LOL
His struggles are very real like and we all have faced these or similar problems in our lives.

The narration, dialogues and the pace of the story make the book an engaging one and had me engrossed till the end.

All in all, Romantic Bouncers is a book that I enjoyed reading and recommend it to everyone. A decent attempt by the author, this is a bouncer you should definitely tackle!

4 out of 5 to it and I hope to read more from the author in the future.

I received the book from the author and I am very thankful to him. The above review is my honest and unbiased opinion and in no way influenced.

Book Review: Pradyumna: Son of Krishna by Usha Narayanan

Title and Author: Pradyumna: Son of Krishna by Usha Narayanan
No. of Pages: 350
Publication Date: July 2015 (Penguins Books India)
Genre: Indian Mythology, Fiction
Language: English

Book Review:
Pradyumna: Son of Krishna by Usha Narayanan is the retelling of the story of Pradyumna who was the son of Lord Krishna, an incarnation of Kama (God of Love) and one who later went on to become a great warrior. With a very imaginative dose of fiction thrown in, this is a very promising attempt by the author to recreate that glorious era of great Kings, magnificent yet deadly battles that created and changed the course of history and the time when Gods ventured the Earth as mere mortals.

The cover is beautiful and attractive. The blurb is intriguing and instantly attracts the readers' attention towards the book.

Indian Mythology has seen a sudden demand with more and more authors taking up well known historical Indian mythological stories and characters to write fictional stories of their own and while this has a definite appeal to us, readers, it also is like a double edged sword where too much imagination and distortion of known facts act as negative pointers for such books.

I recently read Amish's Scion of  Ikshvaku and felt getting bored with so many changes happening to characters I had read about since childhood and somewhere this fictional account didn't agree with me. But here in Usha's book, Pradyumna: Son of Krishna, I am happy to say that the author expertly balances the known story with fiction and gave me a story that while upholding the facts also entertained me with vivid descriptions of events, characters and places, creating a real like picture in my mind. I was easily transported to the era of Kings and Queens with lavish palaces, wearing rich silks with an abundance of jewels adorning their bodies and the ongoing threat of wars from humans and demons alike. A time when Gods had taken the avatar in human form and one in which the world was so different from our present times.

I have enjoyed reading Usha Narayanan's previous book, The Madras Mangler and she proves her writing prowess in this book too. Jumping genres from crime to mythology, her writing is engaging, vivid and easy to understand. She uses simple language but still manages to create a mental picture in the readers' mind and succeeds in connecting the reader with her characters. Her language adjusts beautifully with an era when the designations, terminology and speaking patterns were so different from today. Everything right from the world building to character development to dialogues to the plot looks realistic and approachable.

The description of even the intimate scenes, the scenarios and the emotional state of characters is classically done without any crudeness seeping in.

I enjoyed reading about Pradyumna and some of my favourite characters from Indian mythology again and despite having read and listened to their stories since childhood, the book still managed to make me feel like I was meeting them for the first time. I stayed glued to the book right till the end and was thoroughly entertained.

All in all, Pradyumna: Son of Krishna is a beautifully written story that had me entertained throughout. 4.5 out of 5 to it and recommended to all book lovers. I hope there is a second part to this book and am eager to check it out.

I received the book from the author and the publishers and I am very thankful to them. The above review is my honest and unbiased opinion and in no way influenced.

Book Review: No Perfect Destiny by Jackie Weger

Title and Author: No Perfect Destiny by Jackie Weger
No. of Pages: 233
Publication Date: 1st December 2014
Genre: Contemporary Romance, Romantic Suspense, Indie Author
Language: English

Book Review:
No Perfect Destiny is the story of Leah Spencer, a normal single mother of two adorable kids except as normal as she looks, nothing is commonplace about her starting from her secret past to her attempts at trying to be a wall flower. When Leah is accused of embezzlement of funds, her already complicated life gets more complicated with the arrival of the quirky and yet dashing Detective Leo Garvey who both irritates and attracts her.

What will happen to Leah?
Will she be able to lay low and come out unscathed from this difficulty or will her past finally catch up with her?
Is Leo the man she has been waiting for all her life?

As is the case with Jackie's books, this one too is a feel good romance with realistic characters who are flawed and yet so connectable that I felt like I already knew them!

The cover is interesting and combined with the intriguing title, guarantee of the author's name to give a great story and engaging blurb, this book had me captivated enough to pick it up to read.

I read this book the first time as part of an anthology called the Hearts & Kisses that contains 12 full length novels from 12 Best selling authors and absolutley loved it. I reread it again just recently and had to share the review separately with you.

The plot is simple and yet layers are added to add to the suspense and mystery of the story. Jackie's writing style is simple and yet engaging and she makes the scenes, scenarios and emotions realistic and makes the reader invested in the story. I felt like everything was happening to someone close to my heart and found myself sitting at the edge of my seat in anticipation of events to come, all the time praying for a happy ending to the till now struggle filled life of Leah.

Leah has struggled to give her children a safe haven and despite scraping for every penny, she tries to never deny anything her children want which was very cute and had me feeling more close to her. Her protectiveness towards her children was another thing that won her brownie points from me. The romance between Leo and her starts off as lust but then soon we realize that what they are feeling is honest-to-goodness love!

Leo is a hero unlike any other that I have come across. He dresses in vintage clothes, has some pretty adorable quirks and sounds as someone a little dim but wait till you meet him and he is unlike the image we have created in our minds. He is strong and a dedicated Detective with alpha male like qualities. Both these facets contrast and made him a memorable character for me.

The story moves rapidly and the twists and turns are well calculated that had me engaged right till the end. This is a clean romance and despite the lack of intimate scenes the author manages to convey the romantic feelings of the protagonists very expertly and had me rooting for a happily-ever-after for them.

All in all, No Perfect Destiny is an entertaining romance that I enjoyed reading and then rereading. 4 out of 5 to it and recommended to all romance lovers. I love Jackie Weger's writing style and look forward to reading more from her in the future. Go checkout her books and enjoy!

#TATASkyTransfer: Record, Transfer and Watch TV Shows on the Go with Tata Sky+ Transfer!

I love watching TV! Shows like "Bhabi Ji Ghar Par Hai!" make my otherwise monotonous routine and sometimes dull day brighter with spontaneous laughter and fun but watching TV is not possible with my hectic schedule. What with long hours spent travelling to office and then the fight to watch our favourite shows on TV running in the same time slot, I am often unable to watch my favourites on TV.
Then the uncertain power cuts in my city add another layer of difficulty in my quest of seeking entertainment on the idiot box.

So I am forced to rely on the Internet to watch stuff online. However, this again proves cumbersome with sketchy Internet browsing speeds and the videos take so long to load that it seems better to go without watching anything! {sigh}

But all these woes of mine are solved by Tata Sky with their new Tata Sky+ Transfer set top box!

Source

Tata Sky+ Transfer provides me the facility to Record my favourite TV shows, Transfer them to my mobile or tablet and Carry them anywhere with me! Isn't this just great!

Let me tell you how this set top box is different than our previous Tata Sky set top box.

a) Tata Sky+ Transfer has the unique feature that allows us to record any show on TV. Now this record feature is made even more awesome because it allows me to record a show even while my family watches another show on TV. So, now I don't have to interrupt my mom when she watches her Saas-Bahu sagas or my father when he is engrossed in watching the news or the sports channel. I can simply record the episodes of "Bhabi Ji Ghar Par Hain" and watch it later.

b) I don't have to be physically present to record a show. I can be anywhere and even then record anything being aired on TV by remotely giving a command to the set top box from my mobile to record my favourite shows. I can then watch my favourite recorded show later. No more losing watching anything on TV due to my schedule!

c) I also have the cool facility of watching the recorded show on my mobile. I can transfer the recorded show on my mobile using an Internet connection and watch it anytime and anywhere! Now, with Tata Sky+ Transfer, I am happy to bid adieu to those long and boring hours of commute to office and back because now I am always carrying my entertainment with me in the form of the laughter filled episodes of "Bhabi Ji Ghar Par Hain"!

d) The Internet recording can be used via mytatasky.com or Tata Sky mobile app.

e) Once the shows have been recorded, I can watch them without needing an active Internet connection. Cool, isn't it!

f) Ever faced the issue when you are free and want to watch your recorded series but your mom is watching her favourite show and who can dare switch the channel then! So, with Tata Sky+ Transfer I can watch the recorded series even when someone is watching something else on TV by streaming the recorded shows and watching them on my mobile. No need to wait for the content to transfer!

Meet R.P. Dahlke

I write humorous mysteries about an annoyingly tenacious tall, blonde and beautiful, ex-model turned crop-duster who, to quote Lalla Bains, says: “I’ve been married so many times they oughta revoke my license.” I wanted to give readers a peek at a not so-perfect life of a woman who is not afraid of chipping her manicure because she doesn’t have time for a manicure, what with herding a bunch of recalcitrant pilots and juggling work orders just to keep her father’s flagging business alive.

Beginning with #4 in the series, A Dead Red Alibi, Lalla and her family will reside in South East Arizona where she will divide her time between a fledgling P.I. business with cousin, Pearlie Bains, and volunteering as a team member with  Cochise County Search and Rescue.

I also write a romantic sailing mystery trilogy: A Dangerous Harbor and Hurricane Hole.

Goody One Shoe
by Julie Frayn
Genre:  Psychological Suspense

Billie Fullalove witnesses the murder of her parents at the hands of a gun-wielding thug. In the melee, Billie loses a leg. But her Batmanesque beginnings don’t turn her into a superhero. Yet. Billie survives her lonely childhood and settles into a solitary life, pursuing her dream of being an editor in a top publishing house. Unable to avenge her parents' unsolved murder, she is accosted by news stories of bad guys going free thanks to an inept court system. She wields her red pen and edits the newspaper to fight evil forces, right wrongs, and bring justice to victims. When her edits come true, and criminals start dying, Billie must discover the vigilante’s identity before they act out more of her revenge fantasies.

Meet Julie Frayn

Bean counter by day, Julie Frayn spends her off hours penning award-winning novels and short stories that pack a punch. And a few stabs. When not working or writing, Julie spend as much time as possible with her babies. Well, they're grown adults now, but they still think she's cool. Right kids? Right? Hello?

In grade school, Julie was a math whiz, loved to write stories and poems in English class, and had an artistic flair for pencil drawings and pen and ink pointillism. When it came time to choose a career, she was torn between three loves. Her artistic brain ached to create. But her practical side, and the need to eat, won out. Though she's devoted her career to numbers, she revels in the written word.

~Read My Review~

Jackie Weger is not your typical romance author. She is unpredictable and unconventional. When I started reading The House on Persimmon Road, I had a preconceived notion about it but halfway through, it became crystal clear that it was not a Casper style ghost story nor the saccharine sweet romance I had in mind.

This book is quite different and a pleasant new experience...

~Meet the Author~

An award-winning author, Jackie Weger has been writing romance novels off and on for thirty years. When she's writing, she's anchored in a tiny room with a desk, a chair and a cat. When not writing, blogging or chatting with fans, she's traipsing around the Internet searching for recipes, but much prefers to travel the good earth by foot, bus, canoe, sloop, mule, train, plane or pickup--and let somebody else do the cooking.

She has been writing novels for thirty years. She enjoys destination travel--going to new and strange places, meeting the natives, learning their customs, their foods, how they survive good times and bad. She lived part of one winter with trappers in the Louisiana Swamps, volunteered at a sister of Mercy Mission in Panama--and had one of the most interesting conversations in her life with an old man and his dog as they sat on a bench waiting for a train in the Village of Versailles. Jackie loves books, coffee, tea, cats, gossip and all things Southern.

Meet Rosie Dean

I write romantic fiction with a sense of humour and, sometimes, a sense of the ridiculous. Because we all know life and love aren’t exactly how we’d like them to be.

I’ve been writing stories since I was a little girl, when I was especially industrious and produced dolly-dressing books, complete with a typed story, a dolly to cut out on the back cover, and paper clothing with tabs on. I even sold a couple.

After growing up, I studied ceramic design – gaining a ‘degree in crockery’ as the man-in-my-life likes to call it, which I once put to good use as an Art & Pottery teacher. Deciding I didn’t want to spend my entire life in the classroom, covered in clay and paint, I escaped to the world of corporate communication, where I wrote training courses and marketing copy.
