#BookReview: The Texan's Twins (Texas Rodeo Barons #4) by Pamela Britton

Title and Author:  The Texan's Twins by Pamela Britton
No. of Pages:
Series: Texas Rodeo Barons #4
Publication Date: January 2014 (Harlequin)
Genre: Contemporary Romance, Cowboy Romance

Book Review:
The Texan's Twins by Pamela Britton is the first book by the author and I really enjoyed reading it. This series is written by different authors and while the stories are all standalone, there is an ongoing mystery of the missing mother of Jet and his sisters.

I loved reading Jet Baron's story who hates working for the family oil business and is more interested in rodeos, flying helicopters and  working on the family ranch with horses. He is likable and hit with the ladies but then he falls for Jasmine who is a single mother of twin girls. She has just moved here and is the new employee in his family's oil company.

They get off on the wrong foot but soon Jet's caring nature begins winning over Jasmine's skittishness. The setting is Texas and Pamela builds a realistic world of ranches, horses, rodeos, barbecues, oil mining and the rugged feel of the countryside.

I enjoyed following Jet and Jasmine as they try to figure out their feelings for each other. Jet is a sincere guy who genuinely wants a life with Jasmine and her twins. The heartbreak, romance and family drama are all so endearing that I was left wiping my eyes then feeling hopeful and then smiling watching these two stumble and then get up again.

The twins are so cute. I loved reading about their antics and could visualize them as they were portrayed.

We meet the characters from the previous books in this series again and it was enjoyable meeting them again and watching them so happy in their lives.

Not much is disclosed on the background mystery of the missing mom in this book but still the romance is so admirably narrated that I didn't feel any dissatisfaction.

All in all, The Texan's Twins is an endearing love story of sacrifices, forever kind of love and the determination to cross all hurdles to get to ones happily-ever-after. 4 out of 5 to it and recommended to all lovers of romance.

I received the book from the publishers, Harlequin via Netgalley and I am very thankful to them. The above review is my honest and unbiased opinion and in no way influenced.

#BookReview: Next to You (A Phlox Beauty Novel #1) by Julia Gabriel

Title and Author: Next to You by Julia Gabriel
No. of Pages: 283
Series: A Phlox Beauty Novel #1
Publication Date: December 23rd 2014 by Serif Books
Genre: Contemporary Romance

Book Review:
Next to You by Julia Gabriel is the story of Jared Connor who got burned in a childhood accident and now lives in hiding doing menial jobs despite being a billionaire and Phlox Miller who has returned to her country house to adjust to her changed life and return back as the old, dedicated Phlox. But sparks fly when they meet and it is not something either of them wants.

I love reading romances about reclusive heroes and independent heroines and this one had all this and more in it. The cover, blurb and title are all very interesting and had me intrigued right from the start.

This is the first book by Julia that I have read and it wont be my last!

Her writing style is simple and yet engaging and she had me intrigued and invested in the story right from the start. The plot is beautifully conceived and executed and the author throws well calculated twists and turns in the story to keep the interest alive.

I love Phlox who is geeky intelligent and a strong character. Her life has been spent balancing the expectations of her parents both of whom want different things from her. An accident leaves her battered and struggling with her identity and it was interesting to watch her get up and gain her confidence again. I empathized with Jared at the start but later on could not understand the reason over which they fought and thought they had to stay apart. The other characters like Jared's younger brother and Phlox's business partner and best friend are also some very interesting people and I am so eager to read their story too.

The story is fast paced and held me engrossed but despite the crispness of execution, I felt the intimate scenes were too many and often times did nothing to take the story forward. These could have been toned down a bit.

All in all, I enjoyed reading Next to You by Julia Gabriel and give it 4 out of 5. Seeming a bit like Beauty and the Beast, it appealed to my fairy tale loving self and I recommend it all lovers of romance above the age of eighteen.

Excerpt:
In this scene, Gretchen learns that Kian has a secret dream to be a carriage driver on the island. She has a dream of her own and knows the power of them, so she is determined to help him achieve his goal. "It was a stupid dream. I should sell it, ta pay ya." Kian jerked the covering into place and turned away. "Nein. No." She followed him. "Dream is not stupid. Dream is good." She slowed down to hit the correct sound at the end. Just so he understood. He yanked pieces of oak from the pile near the door and dropped them into her pail. "I help you vith your dream." She pulled out the bigger pieces and returned them to the stack before tugging the handle from his grip. Selecting the right size for the cook stove, she filled her bucket. "You see." "Why?" He stared at the wood pile and huddled in his jacket. She didn't want to think too hard about the why. Instead, she clasped the pail to her chest and hustled for the door. He beat her there and pushed back the snow, so she could squeeze through the opening. Before she exited, he stayed her with a hand on her arm. "Why?" "Because I have the dreams, too. And you are helping to make them true." She ducked under his arm and walked into the cold. More than he knew. Maybe more than was safe for her heart.

#BookReview: Mail Order Doctor (Brides of Tombstone #2) by Cynthia Woolf

Title and Author: Mail Order Doctor by Cynthia Woolf
No. of Pages: 290
Series: Brides of Tombstone #2
Publication Date:  June 2015 by Firehouse Publishing
Language: English
Genre: Western Romance

Book Review:
Mail Order Doctor by Cynthia Woolf is the story of Julia who travels to Tombstone as a mail order bride thinking herself in love with Dr. Matthew Reynolds and vice versa but is shocked to find that Matthew doesn't even know of her existence!

What will happen to Julia?
Will she get her happily-ever-after?

This is the second book in the Brides of Tombstone series but can be read as a standalone without any issues as experienced by me. I hadn't read the first book but dot easily engrossed in this one.

The blurb and title are intriguing and captured my attention right from the start.

The story is straightforward but the author manages to throw some well calculated surprises and had me engaged throughout. The characterization is realistic and I loved Julia's strength, determination and grit but was a bit let down by Matthew. While his objections are understandable but after a while he started looking childish and stubborn not at all like the responsible and mature man he had started as.

I enjoyed meeting Matthew's family and am eager to read their stories. Also I liked Ben and hope to read his love story soon.

The world building is vivid and had me easily transported to the harsh and hard settings of the America of 1800s with mining towns, horse carriages, gown clad women and struggle filled living.

Cynthia's writing style is fluid and engaging and I enjoyed her narration. Hope to read more from her in the future.

All in all,  Mail Order Doctor is a clean romance with a strong heroine who wins over all her difficulties to get her happily-ever-after. 4 out of 5 to it and recommended to all lovers of western romance.

Simple Home Remedies to whiten blackened and tanned skin!

Sometimes despite our best efforts some areas of our body get neglected and suffer from blackened, hard and rough skin. The most common areas of our body to suffer from neglect are elbows, knees, underarms and our backs.

Skin blackening can happen due to many reasons like sweat accumulation, hormonal disbalance and blackening/tanning due to exposure to the sun.

To whiten and soften the skin in such areas, we are ready to try and apply all kinds of cosmetics and artificial products but today I'll share with you some really simple and tried and tested home remedies to whiten, brighten and soften the skin.

1) Lemon and Sugar works magic!

Take a lemon rind (nibu ka chilka) and coat the inside with sugar or brown sugar. Leave it for sometime and when the sugar slightly melts, rub this gently in circular motions on the blackened, hard and rough parts of your body for fifteen minutes.

Repeat this two to three times per week and you'll see the skin whitening and getting velvety soft in no time.

2) Lemon and Honey is the secret to the beauty of the Queens

Lemon juice and honey mixture was used by Queens to brighten, soften, tighten and whiten their skin in the times gone by. This ageless beauty tip has been used and is still used by people all over the world with magical effects seen on the skin.

Mix one lemon juice with one tablespoon of honey and apply on your skin. Wash off after 10 minutes to feel the softness and tightness of your skin and also see all the black spots diminishing after a few repeats.

3) Castor Oil's magic

Apply a few drops of Castor oil with lemon on the affected areas at night and wash off in the morning. Do this once a week to get pearly white and satin soft skin!

4) Banana Mash pack for your skin

Mash a banana and apply on the areas which you want to whiten and soften. Leave for fifteen minutes and then gently wash off while rubbing in circular motions to remove the black patches and get soft and bright skin.

5) Lone Lemon is enough!

If you have nothing else then lemon is easily found in almost all homes. So grab the rind of half a lemon and rub gently on the blackened areas of the body and leave for twenty minutes and then wash off to see visible results.

Apply some lemon juice on your underarms after you take a bath and leave it. This not only acts as a natural deodorant by giving off a lemony smell all day but also protects your underarms from germs and from getting black.

6) Besan (Gram flour), Chandan powder (Sandalwood powder), Masoor Dal Powder (Red Lentils powder), Dahi (curd), Haldi powder (Turmeric powder) and lemon (nimbu) ubtan

Source

Mix Besan (Gram flour), Chandan powder (Sandalwood powder), Masoor Dal Powder (Red Lentils powder), Dahi (curd) , 1 tsp of Haldi powder (Turmeric powder) and lemon (nimbu) to form a uniform paste and apply on the affected skin. Leave on for twenty minutes and then wash off.

This is a multipurpose face pack (ubtan) and works wonders in repairing, tightening, brightening and whitening the skin.

7) Aloe Vera's magic

Apply Aloe Vera gel to the blackened areas of your body. This gel not only cools and soothes the skin but also removes the blackishness to leave the skin looking fairer and healthier.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

With such easily available natural ingredients at our disposal, whitening and caring for your skin is not only easy but also very cheap and with no harmful side effects.

These above are only some of the ways by which we can get that bright, light, beautiful and clear skin without having to spent big bucks on beauty products.

Go try these simple remedies and see the results for yourself!

If you have any other homely skin care tips then share those too in the comments below because sharing is caring!

#MovieReview: The Jungle Book ~Stellar graphics, crisp story and engaging throughout!

Disney's The Jungle Book brings back the childhood memories of watching the animated Jungle Book cartoon series and the animated movie of the same name that had us all enthralled and which still rules our hearts. Be it the commanding and goosebumps inducing Sher Khan or the bubbly and kind Baloo or Bagheera who is hard on the outside and a softy on the inside, this classic tale by Rudyard Kipling of an Indian man child living among animals in a jungle is poignant, adventurous and memorable.

In this latest adaptation of Rudyard Kipling's classic, we get exemplary graphics, a tight story line and beautifully constructed characters with voices lent by some very famous actors and actresses. The whole environment in the movie is CGI and so realistic that not even for one second do we feel like anything is computer constructed and make believe. It is as if we are venturing in the wild with talking animals and a child who not only understands them but also considers them his family!

The movie follows the story in the book but doesn't go into much detail. The Director Jon Favreau sticks to the story but also adds a few twists and surprises of his own. The movie basically deals with Mowgli's encounter and battle with Sher Khan. While I would have loved a more in-depth experience into Mowgli's life in the jungle, I do understand the Director's dilemma of wrapping up the story in a decent run time. The movie's run time is 105 minutes.

I enjoyed the movie and loved revisiting my childhood favourite characters and can re-watch it again. The actors and actresses lending their voices to the characters have done a stellar job and their voices suit the characters from the book. The child actor, Neel Sethi does justice to Mowgli's character and has acted like a pro.

The graphics are most realistic but in some scenes in the later part which happen in the dark or at night, the scenes got a bit too dark at places and I had to strain my eyes to make out what was happening.

I watched the movie in 3D but not many 3D scenes are there. So you can easily watch it in 2D.

All in all, Disney's The Jungle Book movie is a lovely adaptation of the book, The Jungle Book and a movie that had me enthralled throughout. I would recommend this movie to everyone and give it 4 stars out of 5. It will be enjoyed not only by children but adults too. So go watch it with your family and friends and have fun following Mowgli as he tackles Sher Khan!

Friday Feature and Follow #74 ~My criteria of a misbehaving author/reviewer?

Feature & Follow is a blog hop hosted by Parajunkee and Alison Can Read. The purpose is to meet new people and gain more followers in the book blogging community.
If this is your first time here, welcome! You are about to make some new friends and gain new followers. But you have to know, the point of this hop is to follow other bloggers also. I follow you, you follow me.

Prompt of the Week: What's your criteria of a misbehaving author/reviewer?

While overall I have been blessed with meeting really lovely reviewers, I did have an encounter with a nasty incident early on in my reviewing career. One reviewer had started a group and I joined that group and met some really lovely reviewers and authors. Then one day, out of the blue this owner of the group messages me on FB and blames me of influencing the other authors and reviewers against her. Howsoever, I tried to tell her that I hadn't done this, she didn't seem to agree and told me that she had received complaint from an author. When I asked her to show me proof and tell me the name of the author so I could sort out the misunderstanding, she refused and told me that she was throwing me out of the group and that I should start my own group. I was really shocked, hurt and then some at hearing this. Being new to blogging, I didn't know what to do so I silently backed out but now when I look back and see her conniving efforts to blacken my reputation and my actions in not saying anything that led to her spreading bad rumours about me which hampered my relationship with many authors and reviewers, I feel like I should have done something and not silently accepted the blame when I knew I was innocent. Well, I learned a lot from this incident and am more cautious now in trusting people and will definitely not stay silent at any unwarranted accusations.

In relation to authors, I did have one incident with an author who had become somewhat of a friend and whose new book I didn't quite like as much as I had done the previous one from her and like I do in my reviews I gave constructive criticism of some points that I felt could have been better but the author went ahead and not only started ripping my credibility as a reviewers but also started a discussion on Facebook and other places where she tagged the other authors I had reviewed for earlier and other reviewers ripping my review and blaming me of being biased with her book. I came to know about this later and was really annoyed and hurt too. It so happens that she wanted me to give her a good rating just because we were friends. Now, after this incident I have become very cautious while accepting books for review. While I have decided never to review any of her books, for other authors too I mention beforehand that all my reviews are my honest and unbiased opinions and not influenced by friendship to the author. If they agree to my terms, only then do I take up a book to review.

For both misbehaving authors and reviewers, I have decided to not only sever any ties with them but also share the incident with other reviewers and my readers.

What's your criteria?

#BookReview The Last of the Firedrakes (Avalonia Chronicles #1) by Farah Oomerbhoy

#BookReview The Last of the Firedrakes (Avalonia Chronicles #1) by Farah Oomerbhoy

Title and Author: The Last of the Firedrakes by Farah Oomerbhoy
No. of Pages: 488
Series: Avalonia Chronicles #1
Publication Date: August 15th 2015 by Wise Ink Creative Publishing
Genre: YA, Fantasy, Magic, Romance, Adventure

Book Review:
The Last of the Firedrakes by Farah Oomerbhoy first attracted me when I heard about it during a tour. The lovely cover and a blurb that promised detailed fantasy adventure, I knew I had to read it.

This is the debut book by the author and also the first in her Avalonia Chronicles series. The story of a sixteen year old girl, Aurora who lives with her adopted family and is mistreated by them, the story somewhat initially made me remember Harry Potter who was also an orphan and mistreated by the Dursleys. However, in this book, Aurora is kidnapped and dragged through a portal into a magical world, Avalonia which is ruled by an evil queen. Soon the heroine is thrust into a dangerous adventure with unlikely allies where she journeys to not only learn more about herself and her past but also unleash some life altering secrets!

The first thing that I noticed was the way the book starts which reminded me of the opening in the Harry Potter series. However, soon this book makes it clear that it is a different and unique book and in no way similar to any other fantasy series. Here we get a spunky heroine, magical creatures and a fantasy land ruled by a dangerous queen. The world building is expertly and meticulously done and I could not help but feel impressed by the author's prowess in drawing a fictional, magical world that soon started looking so real that sometimes I had to stop and remind myself that it was just fiction!

The characterization is again a strong point of this book. The characters are complex people and sketched and developed in a planned and expert way. Initially I didn't quite like Aurora but then slowly as her character developed, I started understanding her better. Then there is Rafe who just had me loving him right from the start and I would surely love to read more about him.

The story is medium paced and the scenes are described in detail. I was held captive all through the story and then left eager to read the next part.

All in all, The Last of the Firedrakes is a new and very promising young adult fantasy saga that is sure to interest and engage readers. I enjoyed reading the book and recommend it to everyone. 4.5 out of 5 to it. Go read and enjoy this promising start to a new series.

#ARCBookReview: Hard Rain (The Montana Hamiltons #4) by B.J. Daniels

Title and Author: Hard Rain by B.J. Daniels
No. of Pages: 384
Series: The Montana Hamiltons #4
Publication Date: March 22nd 2016 by HQN Books
Genre: Romantic Suspense

ARC Book Review:
Hard Rain is the latest installment in The Montana Hamiltons series and narrates the story of Harper Hamilton. I have been eager to read her story and get her own perspective to all the action and mysterious events surrounding her family.

In this book, there is ample mystery, suspense and enough action to keep the reader hooked. With the background mystery of Harper's mother, Sarah Hamilton's disappearance twenty two years ago and her appearance now with no memory of where she has been all these years, still going strong, there is additional mystery of a murder where a mummified body is found of a girl who went missing thirty five years ago and was thought to be a runaway.  To add to this there is also the romance building between Harper and Brody that had me engaged throughout and left me wanting more.

BJ Daniels is pro at romantic suspense and I enjoy her series which always bring something new to the table and are so entertaining that you cant stop at just one book.

Here too, I could connect with both Brody and Harper and kept rooting for them. Glad to meet the Hamilton family again, it was fun revisiting my beloved characters from previous books.

This is the best book in this series so far  because both the background mystery and the current mystery merge beautifully and give a new insight into the characters' life and motives. I was shocked, frightened and then impressed while reading this book. The people I had thought I knew after reading the previous books show new colours to their characters which are sometimes frightening and other times too different from their image in my mind that I felt awed and also scared thinking of the possibility of such people in real life.

All in all, Hard Rain is another entertaining romantic suspense from BJ Daniels and most definitely the best book in this series which adds more appeal to this already fantastic series. 4.5 out of 5 to it and recommended to all mystery and romantic suspense lovers. I am now eager to read the next one in this series from BJ and cant wait for its release!

Book Review:
Noble Secrets by Cecilia Dominic is the prequel to her Aether Psychics series and the first book by the author that I have read. I got attracted towards this book because of the cover which is mysterious and intriguing. Add the alluring title and I knew I had to read it.

The plot is attractive and executed well. The author had me intrigued by the heroine right from the start. She is running from her past and from a murderer who is after her. The hero, a Duke, is worried about his brother who is dealing with a recent heartbreak and not himself. Circumstances bring them closer and soon sparks fly along with plenty of danger chasing them, I enjoyed how the author sketched the settings. She had me visualizing the world then easily, feeling as if I was there.

The characters are well developed and I could sympathize with the heroine's plight. Some hints are given like she has some power but nothing concrete is told, maybe the power will be disclosed in the future books. I am guessing that she is a psychic but this hasn't been established as fact in this book by the author.

This is a clean story with no explicit sex scenes and had me engaged throughout. Though at some points I wanted more depth in the story like I would have loved a bit more depth in the romance between the protagonists, also the chase with the murderer looked half cooked at places. However, despite this, the story is plenty entertaining and a quick, light read that has me eager to read the next one in this series. I am definitely looking forward to read more about the Duke's professor brother who is an interesting character.

All in all, Noble Secrets by Cecilia Dominic is a clean, light and quick story with plenty suspense, mystery and romance. 3.5 out of 5 to it and recommended to everyone.

I received the book from the author and the tour organizers and I am very thankful to them. The above review is my honest and unbiased opinion and in no way influenced.

Cecilia Dominic wrote her first story when she was two years old and has always had a much more interesting life inside her head than outside of it. She became a clinical psychologist because she's fascinated by people and their stories, but she couldn't stop writing fiction. The first draft of her dissertation, while not fiction, was still criticized by her major professor for being written in too entertaining a style. She made it through graduate school and got her PhD, started her own practice, and by day, she helps people cure their insomnia without using medication. By night, she blogs about wine and writes fiction she hopes will keep her readers turning the pages all night. Yes, she recognizes the conflict of interest between her two careers, so she writes and blogs under a pen name.  She lives in Atlanta, Georgia with one husband and two cats, which, she's been told, is a good number of each. She also enjoys putting her psychological expertise to good use helping other authors through her Characters on the Couch blog post series.
