It is very important to know what country you want to go to study or work before making other plans.
Out of the many countries, decide on the best one for your purpose whether it is a place that offers the best education or better prospects for a job.

2) Decide your field of study and the best educational institute for your purposes.

If you are going abroad for studies then before jumping the gun to packing and bidding goodbye to friends and family, have you decided on the best college for the field of study you want to pursue?
Education is very important and a relevant one can open up doors to a better and happier life. So it is imperative that you know your field of interest and the best place to pursue your education.

3) Plan your finances.

Having a well planned financial backup is important before you move abroad. Here's what you can do:

  • Setup an online bank account that provides you with Internationally accepted ATM/debit and/or credit cards that you can use to get cash in the local currency.
  • Notify your existing bank that you are going abroad so you don't get locked out of your account and they know where to contact you.
  • Carry extra cash when travelling that you can easily exchange in the local currency.

4) Apply for Visa and Passport

To travel abroad you should have a valid passport. So always check these things.

  • You have a passport.
  • If you don't have a passport then apply as soon as possible.
  • Your passport is not expired.
  • Your passport has blank pages in it.
  • All your details in the passport are correct and up-to-date.

Apart from a passport, you should have a visa. Different countries have different procedures for procuring a Visa, so research the procedure before you apply for a Visa and carry all the required documents.

5) Apply for a health and travel insurance.

Apart from having a good health insurance, a reliable travel insurance also comes in handy when travelling abroad because it covers things that a normal health insurance doesn't cover like

  • coverage if your luggage is lost or stolen.
  • coverage if your flight is delayed or cancelled.
  • evacuation in case of an accident or natural emergency etc.

6) Book your tickets in advance.

Flight ticket rates vary a great deal with time so by booking them at least two to three months in advance you can save money and get better deals.

7) Visit a Doctor.

This may sound strange but always get a full body checkup done and a health certificate issued before you travel abroad. This health certificate can come in handy in case of an emergency overseas.

Believe me your life overseas will become very easy when you acquaint yourself with the culture and norms of a place. Knowing what to expect makes you prepared for the novelty you will feel once in a foreign place and makes the acceptance easier.

Also read about the laws of the country so you don't unknowingly break a law and make a smooth arrival to your new home abroad.

Reading and understanding the people will make making friends easier, settling into society bump free and making long term relationships so much simple.

9) Talk to people already living there/studying there.

Always take valuable tips from people already studying in the institution you are getting into and living in the country you are moving to. Talking with them not only makes transition into a new environment easier but will also make your foreign stay meaningful.

10) Learn the language.

Knowing the language of a place makes a world of difference. Even knowing a few common phrases and crucial statements make adjustment a whole lot easier. Try and read up on the language, take a few online classes to brush up your language skills.

11) Locate a place to stay beforehand.

A place to stay when you arrive is a must so you avoid any unsavoury experiences in the initial days and are tension free in a foreign country. You can search for a place to stay online through various recognised rent portals, through verified community groups on social media or by talking to people already living there whether they are students who have studied at the same university abroad or are studying there currently.

12) Pack in a planned manner.
