Book Review:
The Duelist's Seduction by Lauren Smith is the first book by this author that I have read and I enjoyed the whole experience. Reminding me of Shakespeare's Twefth Night where the heroine disguised herself as her twin brother, here too the heroine Helen Banks disguises herself as her twin to duel against Gareth Fairfax in order to save her blundering brother who owes the Duke money that he doesn't have!

The first thing that attracted me towards this book was the beautiful cover that had me intrigued so much that I felt compelled to checkout the blurb that again is catchy and made me preorder this book which was at a huge discount of just 99c then.

I liked Lauren's writing style where she managed to draw my attention and hold it all through the story. Right from the start I was plunged in action and an overall atmosphere of tension. The writing is simple, expressive and had me empathizing and connecting with the characters and events.

I loved Helen and admired her determination to save herself and her brother from ruin. She endured silently and despite all her brother's recklessness and irresponsible behaviour, she still loved him. Her strength in even the most dire situations made me love her even more. She stood strong against Gareth's humiliating conditions and showed that she was truly a lady despite his not-so-honourable demands from her.

I hated Gareth initially and didn't like his rude dismissal of Helen's plight. I disliked him even more when he gave Helen no option but become his mistress, ultimately ruining her life. But despite this initial hatred, I started liking Gareth in the later part of the book when I got a better insight into his life and by the end I was rooting for him. Just imagine the transformation! LOL

The romance between Gareth and Helen is slow to start but which then becomes intense and pretty steamy. The ending had me going misty eyed and rooting for a happily-ever-after for these two broken souls who found completion with each other.

The emotional play is beautifully brought out and makes this book a memorable one. I loved how Helen finally found her place in life and finally found love in the most unlikely place.

The only downside of the story is that it seems a bit rushed and I would have loved to see it get better depth, had more pages been devoted to it. Anyhow, for now also it's entertaining and fun.

All in all, The Duelist's Seduction is a fun, quick and enjoyable historical romance that I loved reading. 4 out of 5 to it and recommended to all lovers of historical romance above the age of eighteen. I loved Lauren's style and will be checking out her other books too.
