Blurb:
When a homeless war veteran is beaten to death by the police, stormy protests ensue, engulfing a small New Jersey town. Soon after, three cops are gunned down. A multi-state manhunt is underway for a cop killer on the loose. And Dr. Tessa Thorpe, a veteran's counselor, is caught up in the chase. Donald Darfield, an African-American Iraqi war vet, war-time buddy of the beaten man, and one of Tessa's patients, is holed up in a mountain cabin. Tessa, acting on instinct, sets off to find him, but the swarm of law enforcement officers get there first, leading to Darfield's dramatic capture. Now, the only people separating him from the lethal needle of state justice are Tessa and ageing blind lawyer, Nathaniel Bodine.
Can they untangle the web tightening around Darfield in time, when the press and the justice system are baying for revenge?
Justice Gone is the first in a series of psychological thrillers involving Dr Tessa Thorpe, wrapped in the divisive issues of modern American society including police brutality and disenfranchised returning war veterans. N Lombardi Jr. is the author of compelling and heartfelt novel The Plain of Jars.
Justice Gone by N. Lombardi Jr. is a brutally honest account of the lives of war veterans when they return from war and try to adjust to normal life and the justice system of modern times. This is a book unlike any other that I have ever read. I went into it expecting nothing because it was the first book by Mr. Lombardi that I was reading but right from the start, I was hooked.
The narrative is crisp, fluid and cinematic. Everything seems like playing in technicolour in your mind. I was horrified, then saddened and then righteously angry at the injustice as I read this book. This is a book that not only entertained me but also forced me to face the uncomfortable issues the book raises.
The character development is realistic. These are multi-dimensional people that have faced the not-so-pretty aspects of life and come out differently on the other side. The story progresses beautifully as the characters mature. I loved Dr. Tessa. A strong character, I know I will be looking out for more of her in the future books by N. Lombardi Jr.
The best aspects of Justice Gone are the courtroom scenes that are so real. The research done to make them so clearly shows when you read the scenes happing there. It is like I am right there watching it all happen!
Another great and noteworthy aspect of this book is the neutral way in which both sides of the issues are showcased. The author doesn't take sides and the facts are presented in an unbiased manner. He leaves the readers to form their own opinions. Doing this is very difficult for any writer and I congratulate Mr. Lombardi on a job well done.
A fast paced, action filled, mystery that thrills and kept me engrossed all through, I give Justice Gone by N. Lombardi Jr. 4.5 super shiny stars out of 5 and Njkinny recommends this book to all lovers of thrillers and legal themed fiction looking for a book with superior narration, great plot execution and memorable characters.
I received a paperback ARC from the author and I am very thankful to him. The above is my honest and unbiased opinion and in No way influenced.
