How to make healthy Jimikand (Sooran or Yam) Recipe ~ Diwali Special

Jimikand is also known as Sooran or Yam has a coarse and thick outer skin but don't go on its appearance, this vegetable is very healthy. If you want to stay fit, active and also lose weight then include yam in your diet.

Jimikand is especially made during Diwali and offered to Goddess Lakshmi. It is believed to bring good luck and prosperity.

Try out this super-easy, very healthy, low oil Yam (Sooran or Jimikand) recipe that can be eaten alone as a snack as well as with roti, paratha or chutney.

How to make healthy Jimikand (Sooran or Yam) Recipe ~ Diwali Special

Healthy Jimikand (Sooran or Yam) Recipe:


1/2 kg boiled yam,
3 tsp rice soaked in water for 15 minutes,
1 onion paste,
1 tsp garlic paste,
1 tsp ginger paste,
1 tsp meat masala,
1 tbsp Amchoor or Unripe Mango powder
1/4 tsp turmeric powder,
1/4 tsp methi seeds or fenugreek seeds,
Salt to taste.
A pinch Hing or Asafoetida.
1/2 tbsp mustard oil or sarson ka tel.
A little chopped green coriander or dhania for garnishing.

Steps to prepare Jimikand Recipe:

1) Peel and cut the boiled Jimikand in thin slices.

2) Ground the water soaked rice and mix the onion, garlic and ginger paste in it. Add Meat masala, Salt, Turmeric powder and Amchoor in it.

3) Heat mustard oil in a thick bottom pan or cooker.

4) Add Methi or Fenugreek seeds and Hing or Asafoetida and let it crackle.

5) Mix the Jimikand slices in the rice and masala mix.

6) Add the Masala mixed Jimikand in the pan.

7) Sprinkle a little water and cover the pan with a lid.

8) Cook the Jimikand on low flame for 5 minutes.

9) Keep turning the slices when they form a crunchy layer over them.

10) Cook until the Jimikand is soft and a crunchy layer if formed over it.

11) Garnish with chopped green coriander or dhania and slit green chillies.

12) Enjoy solo or with chutney, roti and paratha.
