Easy to make Healthy Low Oil Mix Dal Khichdi Recipe

Khichdi also known as Khichadi is a famous dish enjoyed by people in the Indian Sub-Continent.

It is a cuisine in itself. There are so many variants to this simple one pot dish that if I start eating one type today, I wont exhaust the many varieties of Khichdi until years go by!

Usually a mix of lentils and rice but sometimes made using Oats, Sabudana, Bajra and other grains, Khichdi is a complete meal. It is not only very tasty but so easy to make. Rich in protein and fibre, it is also a great way to lose weight in a healthy manner.

Ideal for people of all ages, Khichdi is one of the first solid foods children in India eat. So you can guess the nutritiousness of this dish because parents want the best for their babies. You know! :)

Today's variation of Khichdi uses a mixture of multiple lentils (dal), rice, a few vegetables and minimum oil.


Easy to make Healthy Low Oil Mix Dal Khichdi Recipe


Ingredients Required:


1 cup mix dal (Lentils). You can use any and all lentils. I have used Moong Dhuli Dal (Yellow Gram),  Moong Chilka Dal (Green Gram) and Masoor Dal (Red Lentil) in this recipe.

1/2 cup Rice (Chawal),
1/2 tsp Kooti Kali Mirch (crushed Black Pepper),
2 tsp Desi Ghee (Clarified Butter),
1 Tej Patta,
1/2 tsp Hing (Asafoetida),
1 tsp Jeera (Cumin seeds),
1/2 cup chopped Palak (Spinach),
1/2 cup Hara Pyaz (Spring Onion),
1/4 tsp Haldi powder (Turmeric powder),
1/4 tsp Dhania Powder (Coriander powder),
1/4 tsp Meat Masala,
Chopped Dhania (Coriander) for garnishing,
Chopped onion (pyaz) for garnishing,
1 tsp lemon juice,
Salt to taste

Serves: 3

Cooking Time: 20 minutes

Steps to prepare Healthy Low Oil Mix Khichdi


1) Heat the ghee in a cooker and add jeera, tej patta, hing.

2) Add chopped Spring onion and cook for a minute.

3) Add the washed rice, mix dal, palak, crushed pepper and stir.

4) Add water, salt, turmeric powder and other spices.

5) Close the lid of the cooker and cook till 4 whistles on high flame.

6) Remove from flame and open the lid when the steam dissipates from the cooker. Mix the lemon juice.

7) Serve the Khichdi in a bowl, garnish with chopped coriander and eat hot!
