Dare You, Millie Pai by Jyothi D’Mello Book Review:

Dare You, Millie Pai by Jyothi D’Mello is her debut book and I am so glad I gave this book a chance!

In short, this book was a “roller coaster ride of emotions” and I loved each second spent reading this romance with heart.

Things I liked:

Plot and Narration:

For a debut book, I loved the planning and execution of the plot of this book.

Jyothi kept me guessing until the very end and her narration is fluid and realistic. So, I was sucked in the story right from the start and felt invested in it all through.

The story is medium paced and kept me engrossed until the end. Then the language is simple and error free so it flowed effortlessly throughout.

Characterisation:

The characters are complex and layered. So, Millie is a flawed character whose every instinct is to quit and run away from commitments. Hence she embodies all the fears, guilt, and self-doubt of a person suffering from an unresolved trauma. My heart broke for her and then at times I felt angry with her too because she kept reminders alive in her heart as well as physically around her.

So, Millie’s self-doubt and feeling of shame had my heart breaking like she does in this quote below.

Millie hurt everyone she met, loved and who loved her back, which was why she would not hold Aditya back. She couldn’t bring him into her world of a broken family. No, Aditya deserved better.”

Book Quote from Dare You, Millie Pai by Jyothi D’Mello

Her yearning for Aditya is devastating and yet when she kept running away, at one point I wanted him to leave her be. But he didn’t and won my heart all around!

So, Aditya is my favourite character in this book. He is loyal, persistent and willing to risk his heart time and again for the one he loves. I swooned, sighed in pure delight and also shed tears for him in this book. While I related to Millie’s plight and fears, it was Aditya who had my heart. So, he is the perfect boyfriend and soulmate.

No exes. No Friends with benefits. No, no one. Only you, Li. I need only you…”

Book Quote from Dare You, Millie Pai by Jyothi D’Mello

Millie’s family is all too familiar. Their bury-the-painful-past-and-act-like-everything-is-fine attitude is so common and the author beautifully shows the long term devastating effects this kind of living does to relationships, and personal growth of people in this book. This communication gap played havoc on the family and their relationships with each other as well as any future commitments they had.

Also the author has taken up sensitive topics like mental illness, losing a loved one to Cancer, trauma therapy, importance of familial communication, societal pressure etc. in this book and admirably brought the essence to life.

Then the supporting characters are as relatable as the protagonists and I loved meeting Anya, Jay, Natalie, Omi. So, These are people I can so easily imagine becoming friends with in real life.

Things that could be better:

I enjoyed this book all through and there is nothing worth mentioning for betterment. So, Jyothi is a talented writer and I am sure with practise her writing will get polished more.

Conclusion:

All in all, Dare You, Millie Pai by Jyothi D’Mello is a heartfelt contemporary romance that will take you on an emotionally rich journey of finding love, taking risks, forgiving yourself and moving forward towards a happy ending.

Hence, featuring a heroine with a painful past that has moulded her into a cynic, a loner, and a quitter at jobs and relationships; and a successful and handsome hero looking for love, this is a heartfelt and relatable love story of two lost souls looking for their other half.

A romance with depth, so Njkinny recommends this commendable debut book to all romance lovers and people looking for a touching story with heart. Hence, 4.5 out of 5 super shiny stars to it from me. So, go grab this must read book FREE with Kindle Unlimited now!
