Long Run by T Sathish Book Review:

Long Run by T Sathish attracted me because of the “Matrix” movie style cover. Then the subtitle “A Paradise Augmented” had me further intrigued. So, I decided to give this book a try and I am so glad I did!

I was so pleasantly surprised, sat engrossed all through the book and then was left shocked at the end!

Things I Liked:

Great start:

I was sucked into the story right from the start.

A journalist is sent to interview the “blind fund guru” who is living nearby in isolation after his retirement and wants to tell his story.

Raghu is not doing well, health-wise. He wants to narrate his life story to someone before he loses it all.”

And so starts the story where this blind fund guru, Raghu is the narrator. A visually handicapped fund genius, he is also suffering mentally and physically so he is an unreliable narrator which his helper tells the journalist at the start.

Remember, he is a patient. So don’t ask him too many sensitive questions. It is going to be a monologue for the most part…Also, remember, he might not say things in proper order or any particular sequence. So, you will have to piece them together later. So, listen to him carefully.”

Raghu’s character:

I loved the underlying sense of anticipation and mystery surrounding the life of Raghu and then loved how the author pieced together the narrative. The excitement of the journalist to finally interview a man who beat all odds to succeed and about whom not much is known sets the stage for the readers. So, I sat intrigued to know more about this market genius.

Raghu was a unique personality who overcame his handicap and won. In an industry where players get knocked out by events that come from their blind side, Raghu won leading a life, blind; a remarkable man about whom not a lot was available in the public sphere. I was excited at getting the opportunity to bring his story out into the open and let the world know about his astonishing deeds.”

Long Run by T Sathish Book Quote

Raghu is shown as a carefree, intelligent and friendly boy who is ambitious, loved by his friends, and in love with a girl. Then he tastes success and is blinded by it. In this journey, he leaves behind his family, breaks up with the woman he loves, and ignores every warning from his best friend and family.

…people never learn unless they fall into the trap themselves. Until then, they think that they are way too smart, and the rest of the World is full of fools.”

Storyline and world building:

This story runs in dual time lines- the present and the past. So, the narrative switches between these two timelines.

The world building, the craze of the market boom of the 90s and 2000s, the effect on Indian economy, and the lives of Indians is realistically shown in this book. I could feel the anticipation, the thrill of the chase, and the soaring happiness of success as I followed Raghu and his best friend, Ram. Even if you are ignorant of the share market, you will understand the basics and not feel bored.

Characters:

I loved the characterisation. Be it Raghu who lost everything because of his conceit, Ram who remained a true friend throughout, Anu whose heart he broke, his parents who loved him unconditionally even if they didn’t agree to his new lifestyle. Every character is relatable and the situations such that I couldn’t help but get invested in them.

Through Raghu, the author has shown how sudden success, riches, and glamour threw a brilliant man with every happiness in his grasp down the road to loneliness, and depression.

The contrast between Raghu and Ram is splendidly done and is a learning for the readers. Both face the same situations, experience the same success but while one stays true to his ideals and grounded, the other gets caught in the allure of the new world to ultimately lose everything.

…many times, a person learns his lessons only after getting knocked down. It is then he wants to know why this kind of fate occurred to him. Then, he tries to rationalise it by looking at his bad karma.”

I didn’t like Raghu when he ignored Anu after he had actively pursued her before. His behaviour towards his parents and friends was deplorable but what he did to Anu had my heart breaking. The mystery of whether he got her back or not held me captive throughout.

Raghu’s realisation of the damage he had done, his guilt, and his determination to win her back is what drives him after his accident. Beautifully and poignantly shown, the later half of this book is better than the first half.

Storytelling:

The author’s writing style is simple and engaging. His narration is vivid and had me visualising the story easily. So, he easily held my attention all through the book.

I am so glad to have discovered T Sathish’s books and hope to read lots more from him in the future. He is an author to lookout for!

Things that could be better:

The story jumps between timelines which proved a bit confusing to follow initially. However, after a while I was able to follow the shifts easily.

Also, the regional words and phrases used were difficult to understand. So, I would have preferred a glossary for words like “Da”, “Dei” and so on.

The author has an in-depth knowledge of the share market and has done his research which is noteworthy. However, the technical explanations may prove to be difficult to understand for people with no knowledge of this area.

Conclusion:

All in all, Long Run by T Sathish is a book that will surprise you and leave you a fan. With an unreliable narrator, an active listener, and a story with twists and turns, this book packs a punch and will leave your mouth hanging open in the end!

So, 4 out of 5 stars to this splendid reality fiction and Njkinny recommends this inspiring book to everyone. Especially if you are someone interested in the share market and intrigued by the IT boom in India then you will love the insights into that time provided in this book.
