Dr. Heartquaker by Sudha Nair Review:

Nina is the dutiful daughter and the responsible sister of her family. Faced with the unsuccessful and unhappy results of love marriages in her family, she doesn’t believe in love. Set to marry a perfectly ordinary and socially acceptable man, her world comes crashing down when her fiance breaks the engagement weeks before the wedding. To save her grandmother the grief that can prove too much for her weak heart, her family ropes in their neighbour, Dr. Shekhar to act as her fake fiance.

Shekhar has loved Nina for years but one unfortunate event built obstacles in his path to professing his love to her. Apart from this, there is also the hurdle of age with Nina being older to him that makes his love story fraught with difficulties. Determined, however, to win over the one girl he has loved from afar, he is ready to charm her.

Slowly they fall for each other but will Nina’s social-rules-abiding family accept a younger man as her husband? What will happen when this ruse is discovered?

Dr. Heartquaker by Sudha Nair is a book that will resonate with readers of marriageable age, especially from India. Chaotic Indian marriage scene, the dramatics of Indian families and the hopeless matchmaking are all so relatable that at times, it felt so real as if happening not in a book but in the physical world.

The plot is straight-forward and even predictable but the narration kept things tight. Fluid, simple language with vivid descriptions make the story feel like a techni-colour movie.

I enjoyed everything in this book. The character development, the plot execution and the suspense thrown in to keep a reader’s interest. Everything is done admirably and I can confidently say they succeed in keeping readers engrossed. I finished this book in one sitting and was thoroughly entertained.

The only thing that made me feel frustrated was Nina’s reluctance to take a stand and her fear of disappointing her family that kept her feeling miserable and in turn, impacted others too. However, this is a reality in many cases where people, in deference and love for their families, often sacrifice their happiness.

Author gives the readers food for thought with her digs at the social prejudices and norms that keep people from finding love and acceptance.

I loved the characters in this book, especially Nina’s grandmother who had me remembering my own grandmother with her poise, elegance and open-mindedness. Nina’s mother and her aunt’s banter was fun and I am eager to read the individual stories for Nina’s sister, Suchi; her aunt, Ragini; and am hoping for a happily-ever-after for Nina’s mother too. Hope I get to read their stories soon and meeting Nina and Shekhar again would definitely be the cherry on an already tasty cake!

…my grandmother had always told me that to check if a man was worthy, one had to feel his hands. There was much to be learnt about a man just by touching his hands, she always said. If they were soft, it meant the man loved his mother. If they were hard and callused, it meant he was a hard worker. If they were stable and not shaking, it meant a man was successful. But the best hands, she said, were the ones that just felt right- neither too soft nor too firm nor too stiff. They had to be the perfect blend of everything.”

She said the best part was nobody could teach you how to feel hands. The only way you knew was when you met the right man, you’d feel in your heart what you were feeling in his hands.”

In conclusion, Dr. Heartquaker by Sudha Nair is an engaging, thought-provoking and heartfelt Indian romance that will keep you hooked and leave you wanting more. 4 out of 5 stars to it and Njkinny recommends this beautiful love story to all romance lovers. I had tears in my eyes and happiness in my heart when Shekhar and Nina got their happy ending. Go read this book now!

He’d loved no-one else his whole life the way he loved her. He’d love no-one else until his last breath. It was a promise.”
