Rock Courtship by Nalini Singh Book Review:

Rock Courtship is a story that explores the music world and the people who inhabit it. David is famous yet he is shy. Thea looks strong but is vulnerable inside.

I was suggested the book by a friend who had read it and loved it so much that she was all praise.

Things I Liked:

Cover and Plot:

I loved the cover on sight and was very intrigued by the blurb. I have to confess I haven’t read many books with music stars but this is so well narrated that I was instantly hooked.

There is drama, intense emotional scenes, a fluid narration and sex scenes that are almost erotic. The story is well conceived and executed. The flow is maintained throughout the book and the dialogues well written to bring out the emotional turbulence faced by the protagonists.

When you suffer such a big hurt, the longer you permit it to live in you, the bigger it grows, until it seeks to devour your soul.”

Intimate Scenes:

I was a bit uncomfortable with the sex scenes which are too many but the author is able to use them as a means of showing emotions and takes them a bit higher than just sex to love making. So I won’t complain too much here. David and Thea, together are explosive, sensuous and burn the whole atmosphere with the intensity of their feelings for each other.

You don’t mind calluses, do you, Thea? They come from drumming so intensely over a long period. All that physical work also means I have plenty of stamina. I can go as long and as hard as you want, or as slow and as deep, or any combination thereof. Hard and deep. Slow and long. Hard, deep, long? I can do that.

Your choice”

Characterization:

The characterization is noteworthy. I felt empathetic towards David who is hopelessly in love with Thea but always rejected by her. I rooted for him and was impressed by his perseverance and strength. He is truly the Gentleman of Rock and when he did play dirty, he was too sweet and left me giddy with pleasure like a love struck teenager. 🙂

The idea of sending memos is totally new and made me love the story more. I enjoyed reading the memos and loved the interchange between David and Thea. The last memo was specially sweet and I applaud the author for thinking of such an idea.

Thea made me feel angry at first. I felt she was being unduly stupid by letting David go but then when all the reasons of her abstinence from committing came out, I felt sorry for her and prayed that she take a risk with David. The band members are also introduced in this book and the strong bond of friendship, trust and love is shown admirably among them. I loved David’s and Thea’s family who are loving, sometimes interfering and always very supportive of them. Both Thea and David’s parents have seen many hard times and through effort got a love that is the forever kind. Their stories of finding love touched my heart and made me appreciative of all the love that I have in my life.

I loved Thea’s mother the most. She is strong, wise and knows Thea too well.

This below quote that Thea’s mother said specially stayed with me.

Love has many guises, Thea. Sometimes it’s a stroke of lightning as it was for your father, other times a slow building storm as it was for me, but the one thing that never changes is that it must be nurtured. You can’t kick a heart and expect it not to flinch.”

Conclusion:

Nalini Singh is a talented writer and she shows her prowess beautifully in this book. She paints a shiny world of music with parties, groupies, one night stands and then compares the people that inhabit this world to their true selves. Despite being in the limelight and appearing carefree, most are hiding deep hurts, secrets and a personality worlds apart from their ever smiling public face.

All in all, this was a book that kept me hooked, made me laugh and feel too happy and eager to start on the other books in the Rock Kiss series by Nalini Singh. 4.5 out of 5 stars  to Rock Courtship and Njkinny Recommends it to all lovers of romance above the age of eighteen. I will be checking out the other books by Nalini and wish her the very best.
