Fallen by Mia Sheridan Book Blurb:

Scarlett Lattimore arrives at Lilith House, an abandoned mansion built in 1876, that later housed a reform school for troubled girls, to start a new life with her seven-year-old daughter.

But between the nearby town with the strange, disconcerting feel, the deputy sheriff who is equal parts intriguing and suspicious, and the discovery that their new home holds a dark and violent past, Scarlett soon begins to question her rash decision.

She is shaken and afraid by the screams that echo in the walls and the drumbeat that arises from the surrounding woods where the ghost of an indigenous man is said to roam, seeking vengeance. Her fear is also personal, because Scarlett knew one of the girls who attended the school, a friend who escaped into those woods and was never seen again. They all thought she was a rebellious runaway who later encountered foul play, but perhaps the truth is far more sinister.

As Scarlett’s extraordinary daughter Haddie becomes consumed by the eerie figure who weaves and beckons through the forest fog, and a legacy of secrets reveal themselves, it becomes clear both Scarlett and Haddie are in grave danger. When the past intersects with the present, they will come face to face with the true evil of Lilith House. An evil that has lasted for more than a century.

Fallen by Mia Sheridan Book Review:

A haunted house, a strange town with hiding dark secrets, this book will have chills running down your spine as you sit entranced and totally engrossed by this intense, spooky, emotional, and overall memorable story!

Fallen by Mia Sheridan Book Summary:

A mother-daughter pair start hearing mysterious screams in their new home, and coupled with the creepy legends about the place about ghosts, hauntings, and unexplained accidental deaths, Fallen by Mia Sheridan takes the readers to Lilith House, an abandoned mansion with a dark history riddled with spooky stories, chilling secrets and strange deaths.

‘Surely ghosts reside here’, she thought, or at least, that was the overall effect of the house where time had apparently stood still for over a decade. “

‘I’ve moved my daughter into what appears to be the quintessential haunted house’, she realised with an internal grimace.”

Things I Liked:

An engrossing read I finished in one sitting!

This book is completely different from Mia Sheridan’s past books and just as entertaining. I absolutely adore this talented writer’s stories and she shines in this book too. A dark, chilling, suspenseful, and yet deeply emotional story, Fallen had me glued to my seat throughout. So, I sat enchanted late into the night gasping in shock, squeezing my eyes shut to ward away my horror at the cruelty of humans. And often checking behind my back for some unknown presence. Then I had to know what happened next and read this book in one sitting!

A complete package that spooked me and held me captive throughout.

Definitely one of the best books of 2020, the world building, the characters, the plot, and the narration, everything is top-notch. While the romance is not the main theme, still I loved it and am awed with the ease with which the author incorporated it in this highly suspenseful story that could just as easily overshadow it but it didn’t here.

Atmospheric, and immersive World Building.

Lilith House had once been a reform school for wayward girls. But something tragic happened here. And it sat abandoned for thirteen years until Scarlett and Haddie bought it and shifted here. Then the town nearest to the house is strange with an undercurrent of sinister served hot. And while reading you will feel the shift in the current whenever something shocking is about to happen yet it will always manage to take you by surprise!

Also right from the prologue the author builds the curiosity of the readers. And like me, I guarantee you will also sit engaged throughout quickly turning pages to know more. So, giving all the looks of a horror and sometimes edging on it too, this book is not a horror. It’s a thriller that will have goosebumps erupting on your skin and chills running down your spine throughout!

Serious social evils taken up by the author.

The author also takes on serious issues of harassment, rape, religious brainwashing, and cruelty done in the name of God. She then brings forth the helplessness of victims who know that no one will believe them if they raise their voice against the atrocities done to them. My heart bled. And I had to stop several times to get over the horror, pain, helplessness, and anger I felt on behalf of the victims who had no one to help them. And to whom everything was being done in the guise of righteousness and for their own betterment, in the name of God!

Role of parents and society in helping people reform.

Mia Sheridan also talks of the role of parents, and society in helping people reform. If they only understand, support and not judge, the wayward will see the light. But often times, the judgement, disbelief and shunning makes returning impossible and worst, leads to developing a feeling that (harassment, isolation, shunning, and helplessness) is what they deserve.

I cried my eyes out as I read the plight of the victims. And then raged at the atrocities they suffered through their parents’ negligence, and society’s hypocrisy.

This quote says it all. If only people offered grace and left judgement.

There were no fallen women. Just women who had made mistakes and deserved grace, not judgement.”

A horrible dose of reality that left me shaken.

How people twist the teachings of God to suit their own vendettas. And how this impacts everyone around them is something I got a dose of when I read Fallen. So, I have no words to explain all the feelings I felt and how my  heart broke as I read this book. But just when you think there is no light in this dark world, people like Kandace, Scarlett, Hattie, Camden, Mason, Georgia come along and prove you wrong.

They proved that as long as there are fighters, the evil will never win. Then the end left me hopeful, happy, and positive for a world where one day everything will be alright.

Is anything forever?”

He’s once asked his wife that very question…”

Human resilience. The power of grace over condemnation. The God given ability that resides in every human heart to distinguish right from wrong, truth from falsehood, and love from pain.”

Positive things I took away from this beautiful book.

I am so looking forward to reading Mason, Geogia, Millie, and Hattie’s stories and hope the author writes them soon. The power of friendship is another beautiful teaching I took away from this book, along with the value of grace, kindness, love, and the ability to decide right from wrong.

A friend- just one true one – could save your soul. And the gift of friendship lasted forever, its lingering grace there to draw strength from even when you were alone.”

‘There is a battle between two wolves inside us all. One wolf is evil and angry. Jealous and resentful. The other wolf is good. It is filled with love and hope, humility and empathy.’ She paused and he leaned toward her unbidden.”

The little boy thought about it and asked, ‘Grandpa, which wolf wins?’ And the old man quietly replied, ‘The one you feed.'”
