This Knight of the Crown is driven by a painful past and a patient fury… and his entire life is a lie.

Sir Carlton Morley is famously possessed of extraordinary will, singular focus, and a merciless sense of justice. As a man, he secured his fortune and his preeminence as Scotland Yard’s ruthless Chief Inspector. As a decorated soldier, he was legend for his unflinching trigger finger, his precision in battle, and his imperturbable strength. But as a boy, he was someone else. A twin, a thief, and a murderer, until tragedy reshaped him.

Now he stalks the night, in search of redemption and retribution, vowing to never give into temptation, as it’s just another form of weakness.

Until temptation lands—quite literally—in his lap, taking the form of Prudence Goode.

Prim and proper Pru is expected to live a life of drudgery, but before she succumbs to her fate, she craves just one night of desire. On the night she searches for it, she stumbles upon a man made of shadows, muscle and wrath… And decides he is the one.

When their firestorm of passion burns out of control, Morley discovers, too late, that he was right. The tempting woman has become his weakness.

A weakness his enemies can use against him.

A Dark and Stormy Knight by Kerrigan Byrne Review:

A Dark and Stormy Knight by Kerrigan Byrne is the latest historical romance release from the author that takes the readers back to the Victorian Rebels series to a world full of danger, action, painful pasts and swoony heroes honed in the fires of pain who fall for strong heroines that complement them beautifully.

A justice loving staid Chief Inspector by day and a dark shadowy vigilante by night, Carlton Morley has come a long way from his poverty ridden childhood but is still stuck in the dark recesses of his painful past. Prudence Goode is a romantic by heart and her only wish is to marry for love and have a family of her own. But all her fanciful dreams of a happy future with her fiance are dashed when she comes to know of his many affairs. Heartbroken she vows to have one night of passion before she is forced to marry a man who will never love and cherish her.

A chance meeting in disguise leading to a passionate night leaves them yearning for more but they are resolute to go their separate ways. Months later when Prudence is accused of killing her fiance, Morley is called to investigate and a secret is revealed that will change his life forever.

First off, I adored the cover of this book. It is so detailed and combined with the blurb sure to attract readers at first glance just like it did me!

I have read all the books in the “Victorian Rebels” series and had been eagerly awaiting Carlton’s story and was not disappointed. A loyal friend, a justice abiding Inspector of law and a man of principles, he has had a hand in saving so many lives but is still alone amidst all his friends, forever seeking someone to call his own. My heart bled with him and I wanted a happy ending for him so desperately.

While this book is part of a series, it can be read as a standalone. I so enjoyed reading this romance that has an engaging plot, multi-dimensional characters and a vivid narration that had me transported to the time of the story with ease.

Prudence’s pain and humiliation became my own as I felt her shock and anger at the betrayal of her loved ones and then the soul-deep anguish at their mistrust in her. A woman had no rights in those times and still the strength she displayed had me admiring her and rooting for a happy ending for her.

Hers was a face for the sun. She was a spoiled woman experiencing her first heartbreak.”

Learning her first terrible truth about the world of men in which she lived.”

She didn’t know the first thing about pain.”

And yet…the courageous way she fought her threatening emotion, tied him up in knots.”

Quotes from A Dark and Stormy Knight by Kerrigan Byrne

Carlton Morley’s painful past has shaped him into the man he is today. Mistrustful of everyone with very few confidantes, he lives and breathes for justice.

He was no hero. These were just things he did, sweeping up small crimes while he chased nightmares through the night. “

Back when he’d attempted to sleep, he’d been tortured by them. Eventually, those nightmares had seeped into the daylight, following him from the dark until they filled every corner of every room. Shades and specters. The ghosts of those he’d killed, of those who’d endeavored to kill him. Of the souls he’d failed to save and the monsters who’d escaped justice.”

For decades they’d haunted him, tormented him endlessly each time he dared close his eyes. Until he’d done something about it.”

He became the thing from which nightmares ran.”

Quotes from A Dark and Stormy Knight by Kerrigan Byrne

Though he is attracted to Prudence, his mistrust towards her hinders his relationship with her. Sometimes I felt frustrated with him but then the next moment he did something that endeared him to me again.

The chemistry between him and Pru is off the charts and I loved the balance between physical intimacy and the emotional play in this story. All through the book, a reader is kept engaged both heart and mind in the story. My heart kept rooting for a forever kind of happiness for the protagonists while my mind kept trying to solve the mystery of the killer of Pru’s fiance.

We meet the protagonists from the previous books in the “Victorian Rebels” series and it was an awesome feeling just like meeting old friends. This series has been amazing and definitely one of those memorable series that are a must-read. Njkinny recommends “Victorian Rebels” series to all historical romance lovers.

While I enjoyed this book very much and sat glued to my seat all through while I flipped the pages in deep concentration, I felt the ending could have been better. It felt a bit rushed.

Apart from this, everything is without fault and A Dark and Stormy Knight by Kerrigan Byrne is a thrilling, enchanting and heartfelt historical romance that had me crying, swooning and then going all Scotland Yard Detective trying to solve the mystery in this oh-so engrossing story.

5 stars out of 5 to it and Njkinny recommends this one and the series to all historical romance lovers above the age of eighteen. Kerrigan Byrne is an author whose books are guaranteed entertainers. All her books that I have read have become my favourites and she has easily earned a place in my list of favourite authors.

I received an ARC for review and the above is an honest and unbiased review that is in no way influenced.
