Carly Baron is back to the Roughneck ranch to look after her ailing father but antsy about coming across Luke Nobel, the ranch manager of her family ranch and also the man she loved and the one who broke her heart all those years ago! Luke is now widowed and father to an adorable two year old. Seeing Luke with his daughter brings back painful memories, ones which Carly is desperate to hide at all costs. Staying away is the only option but the thing she doesn’t take into account, their mutual attraction for each other, is back to test them once again!


I enjoy reading cowboy stories set on big ranches with a lifestyle completely different from my own. I live in the city and it’s very calming to read about vast countrysides, big ranches with horses, rugged cowboys and strong women who handle their home as well as work the ranch.


The cover is sweet and the little girl so adorable. The blurb is catchy and manages to capture the interest of the readers.

In The Texan’s Little Secret Barbara takes the readers to the Roughneck Ranch and introduces a new character from the Baron family. Prominent, respected and a big family, the Barons are a varied yet loving family. The settings are beautifully described and create a picture in the minds of the readers. I could visualize the main house and the ranch. The characterization is fluidly done and although I could feel that I was missing the stories of some characters like Carly’s sisters’ Lizzie and Savannah but still this did not affect my interest in the current story much.


I enjoyed the family reunion. The continuing story of the search of Carly’s mother is taken up in this book also. It is developed a little and then left to be continued in the next book in the series. The story of Carly and Luke is sweet but very predictable. 


Barbara’s writing style is crisp and fluid. She takes the readers right into the middle of the story and is a good narrator.


Although, overall, Barbara manages to hold the interest of the reader but still I got a bit bored in some places. I felt that the Carly and Luke angle was developing very slowly and the same arguments were being given again and again. In the second part, everything is wrapped up a bit hurriedly. Suddenly Carly is seeking explanation from Luke for some misunderstanding rather than forming an opinion already like she always does. Also I didn’t connect with the intimate scenes. 


Carly and Luke know each other too well but are still caught up in the past. They have their own fears and disappointments. With a strong and unresolved past, I expected more clashes of interest and more emotional turmoil in the story. Instead all the action feels a bit passive and Carly and Luke never once look like they have finally showed their emotions a cent percent.

Overall, I loved the settings and the characters. The story of the search for Carly’s mother is very intriguing. A sweet romance which will make a fitting leisure read, I give The Texan’s Little Secret 3.5 out of 5.
