Rainbow, The Shades of Love by Aman Jassal is the story of Yuvi and his many mistakes that mark his romantic journey. The cover is attractive and the title unusual. The logic behind the title becomes clear when you start reading the book. The blurb is interesting and had me wanting to check the book out.


There are two things I loved about this book. First, the use of rainbow to tell the story. You will understand what I am talking about when you read the book. Second, the ending which is unconventional but very fresh and I liked this brave effort from the author to end his story like this.


The plot is well conceived but lacks a bit in execution. There are sudden changes to the story line that baffled me and I could feel the loophole in the story. But despite this, I enjoyed reading the book.


The writing style of the author is simple and engaging but the many mistakes in editing and sentence construction downplay his writing. Tighter, crisper and more concise narration could have made wonders to the story. Aman is talented and with practice will be able to shine his talent. The settings are realistic and I could visualize the scenarios but I could not connect myself with them, maybe because I have never faced such situations and met people like Yuvi.

The characterization is admirable but I would have loved a better description of Yuvi. No physical description is given for him which made it difficult for me to connect with him. The other characters are sketched well but the author needs to work on his character development skills. There is very little character development and so the story didnt go as well as it should have.


This book tells the romance story from a boy’s perspective which is interesting to read about but still Yuvi doesnt become a memorable character. I felt empathetic towards him when he realized his mistake and wanted to repent for it but then he goes and makes another one which made me lose interest in him. I liked Simran better. She is intelligent and makes a somewhat lasting impression and I agreed with her final choice.


All in all, Rainbow, The Shades of Love is a light romance which can be enjoyed once. It had potential but didnt quite meet expectations. Despite all the little flaws which could have been handled with more time spent on editing and revisiting the plot, I enjoyed the book and wish the author the very best for the future. He is talented and I will be checking out his future works. 3 out of 5 to this book from me.
