Sherlock Holmes and The Beast of the Stapletons by James Lovegrove Book Review:

I am a huge fan of Sherlock Holmes mysteries by Arthur Conan Doyle and “The Hound of Baskervilles” is a favourite.  So, when I came to know of this sequel to the classic, I didn’t waste time and picked the book to read.

This is the first Sherlock Holmes book written by James Lovegrove that I have read but I am so glad I took a chance on it. Had I not known that this was not an Arthur Conan Doyle book, I wouldn’t know the difference.

I was impressed by the writing style, the fluid narration, and the ingenious plotting of the mystery with well-calculated twists and turns. These make this book almost as if it was written by the creator of Sherlock Holmes character!

Things I Liked:

Book Blurb and Cover:

The blurb is intriguing and the book cover is just gorgeous. Both these are sure to attract readers’ eyes as they did mine.

Loved the expert use of the summary of previous book to create a sense of urgency in this one:

A short summary of “The Hound of Baskervilles” case is given in this book and expertly used to take the story forward.

The sense of urgency, an impending doom, and the chilling stroke of the supernatural, all seem so real and similar to its predecessor case.

Henry Baskerville is in danger again. And this time, too, there is speculation of something unnatural being after him. Then Sherlock Holmes is his usual skeptic self. And his stellar performance in solving this case had me glued to my seat all through.

A worthy sequel to “The Hound of the Baskervilles”:

I absolutely adored reading this book. And think it is a worthy sequel to the bestseller classic from Sir Arthur Conan Doyle.

James Lovegrove’s handling of the characters, the world building, narration, and the mystery is admirable. So, I will be reading more of his books in the future and highly recommend this book to everyone.

Things that could be better:

The only thing that I need led me to take away one star from my rating was the slower second half of the book. The first half with its crisp, fast-paced, and chilling narrative had me feeling a bit letdown when the second part came. Then the narration wasn’t at par with its predecessor. And I, also, didn’t feel as wowed by the reasoning of the villains for their actions. But maybe, it is just me and you won’t feel like this.

Conclusion:

Anyhow, this is a stellar mystery and speaks volumes on the writing prowess of the author. Getting into the giant shoes of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle and doing justice to an iconic character that comes with huge expectations from the readers, James Lovegrove has proved his mettle with this book. So, kudos to him and I highly recommend this author to everyone.

All in all, Sherlock Holmes and The Beast of the Stapletons by James Lovegrove is a must-read for all Sherlock Holmes’ fans. And this book will have you guessing until the end. The crisp storytelling and beautiful plot execution make this a worthy sequel to “The Hound of Baskervilles” by Arthur Conan Doyle. So, if you want to know what happened after the hound was killed then you will get your answers in this book. And they are answers that satisfied the fan in me.

Hence, 4 out of 5 stars to it and Njkinny recommends this book to everyone. Go read it now!
