Grayson’s Way by Lisa Eugene Book Review:

A man battling Schizophrenia, Grayson has been diligent in his efforts to stay in the present and never spiral into psychosis like in the past but what happens when despite all his efforts, the voice is back. It is taunting him again. Telling him he is incapable of keeping his family safe and that the “Others” are back. The “Others” will harm his dear wife, his beloved children, and he won’t be able to do anything.

There is someone dangerous after Grayson and his family who is willing to do anything to cause them harm. But is this someone real or just a figment of his troubled mind?

A poignant, raw, and emotionally rich story that delves into the troubled world of Schizophrenia patients who are never quite sure that what they are experiencing and seeing is real or not. Judged harshly by society, labelled as “mad”, and often times neglected by friends and family, Schizophrenics are rarely given the understanding, love and support they need, even now in the modern world. I cried and my heart broke as I watched a good man, a family man, and a talented man loose his sense of reality, and face prejudice from people both known and unknown.

A knot tightened in the pit of my stomach. Why wasn’t he addressing Grayson? Grayson was asking the questions, obviously the one with the most concerns. Why was the administrator so nervous? And what the hell did he mean I understood? As though Grayson did not – could not.”

Angie loves her husband so much and is willing to stand by him no matter what. Her life is already a struggle with her parents and society judging her for marrying a man almost twenty years her senior. Add his battle with Schizophrenia to this mix and the author shows the battles families of people suffering from mental diseases face every day. I was angered, saddened, and crushed as I watched people giving Angie heartache and trouble when what they should have been doing was supporting her!

The plot is expertly planned and executed and I was hooked right from the start. I picked this book up not knowing anything about it being a continuation of Angie-Grayson’s story but this didn’t affect my enjoyment. It is perfectly okay to read this book as a standalone.

This is my first Lisa Eugene book and I am so in love with her writing style. She brought everything out so beautifully. So many emotions assailed me as I read this soulful romance. I felt hot by the sizzling romance, bit my nails in excitement as I followed the suspense, and shed tears at the sensitive issues brought up by the author like society’s fear of mental patients, society’s prejudice towards them, and lack of support extended to them.

People are afraid of what they don’t understand. It’s that way with a lot of mental disorders.”

It’s worse with schizophrenia. Probably because our cultural perception of the disorder is so negative. And the media only reinforces the horrible myths.”

However, all is not hopeless and the author also showed the goodness in people by bringing to life characters that accepted and supported Angie and Grayson, and who were sympathetic and understanding of their challenges. Medical explanations and treatments are also like rays of hope and I loved how good doctors treat patients with love and understanding. The message that all is not lost if you are diagnosed with a mental illness is also brought to fore loud and clear. She shows that people with mental illness can be cured and lead a normal life. All they need is proper medical support and love and understanding from everyone else.

I thought of Grayson. He was someone many underestimated. So many just saw his schizophrenia and sadly failed to look deeper. They missed the fact that he was a real man, an incredibly beautiful man with the same desires and fears of other men. He was funny, protective, intelligent, kind, sexy, layered with such complexity that his schizophrenia was only a fraction of who he was. Many had doubted that Grayson could live a “normal” life. I’d always had faith—faith in him and faith in the incredible love we shared. Despite several relapses, we were happy. Our family thrived, and our bonds only grew stronger every day.”

This is an intense romantic suspense that has so much more happening apart from Grayson’s illness. The story kept me engrossed throughout and then left me jumping in joy. I would love to meet Angie and Grayson again.

All in all, Grayson’s Way by Lisa Eugene is my new favourite romance and Njkinny recommends this intense, sizzling, suspenseful and hauntingly emotional romance to all romance lovers above the age of eighteen. Lisa Eugene is an author who has impressed me and I will be checking her other books now.

5 super shiny stars out of 5 to it from me. Go read this book and Lisa Eugene’s other books too!
