What You Never Knew by Jessica Hamilton is a creepy, atmospheric thriller that is narrated from the POVs of two sisters. May is dead and yet she lingers on and June, the younger Bennett sister who is shattered by her beloved sister, May’s death.
This is Jessica Hamilton’s debut mystery and I absolutely loved it and sat engrossed throughout. What You Never Knew is the story of the Bennett family that is dysfunctional, has hidden secrets so deadly that they have the power to destroy lives.
The story takes place on an abandoned island called the Avril Island that was once their summer place and has happy memories attached to it for the sisters. But unknown to them, this place also hides secrets that had their mother ushering them back to the mainland one summer years ago, never to return ever again. She was so determined to keep these secrets that she even lied to her daughters about selling Avril island. Now she is dead and with May dead too, June travels back to the place that was once her happy place and what she finds here will change her life forever!
The mysterious Avril island had a character of its own and it felt like it was alive so often in the book that it had me going emotional one second and then had goosebumps erupting on my skin and chills running down my spine the next.

A cleverly constructed mystery that is also emotionally rich and had me going teary eyed so often, it is so much more than a mystery. It deals with sensitive issues like missing persons, mental illness, dysfunctional relationships, childhood trauma, parent-child relationship, psychological trauma, and impact of nurture on our character development. It is a story of love, loss, grief, and second chances.

Lastly, it is an expertly executed thriller suspense with shocking twists and turns that will have you riveted until the end.
The ending is bittersweet and felt a bit rushed. I was left with a sense of a closure missing for my favourite characters and wanted to know more. While the mystery element is satisfactorily closed, I wanted more for June and Ezra and in this, I felt disappointed.
All in all, What You Never Knew by Jessica Hamilton is a book that left me enchanted. I have no words to effectively bring out its impact on me as a reader but know this, this mystery is one of the best I have read in sometime and a must read. Readers will be forced to reevaluate their lives as they follow June on her journey to self-discovery and maturity.
4 out of 5 stars to it and Njkinny recommends this stellar book to everyone, especially mystery, thriller and suspense lovers. It takes the readers on a wild ride through the darker aspects of human nature so beware.
I have found a new favourite author and am so eager to read what she writes next!
