The Unknown Man by Natalie Hanson Book Review:

The Unknown Man by Natalie Hanson is the first book in “Zalla Bennbett Mystery Series” and the first book by this author that I have read, and I am so glad I gave this book a chance.

It gripped me right from the start and kept me on my toes throughout.

Who is a friend and who is the enemy?

Where to find the missing persons and who was behind it all?

These questions had me raking my brains to solve the mystery.

Book Summary of The Unknown Man by Natalie Hanson:

Zalla Bennbett is forty years old and a FBI Agent. Born with the ability to sense out lies, she has been shuffled across departments to work on the most puzzling of cases. So, when a seemingly simple and unimportant missing persons case is handed to her, she is confused why she is needed here. But soon, it becomes apparent that not only is this case anything but simple, but also that people in her office want her to fail. With office blackmail and harassment, a husband struggling with Cancer, and a case that just doesn’t add up, Zalla will have to use all her abilities, both innate and from her FBI training to solve this twisty mystery of the kidnapping of two young twin sisters before it is too late!

Things I liked:

This book came as such a surprise to me. This twisty, ingenious, and multi-layered thriller mystery had me gasping in shock and often closing my eyes in horror at imagining the levels to which humans fall to. Your heart will break at the injustice in the world and yet, as you shed tears, there will be a determination to catch the psychopaths that target children.

The book title is so apt. Often psychopaths come is all forms. They can be our friendly neighbor or the milkman who has been to our house for years or a stranger. The author shows that anyone can be a criminal. There is no set criteria to identify one.

Narration:

The narration is fluid and the story moves like a thriller movie. So, I could visualize the small town settings, the close knit community, the suspicion of the residents towards outsiders, and the cunning of the criminal in planning the almost perfect crime.

I loved the author’s writing style and am so eager to read more of her books.

Also loved these points:

I loved how the author has empathetically shed light on congenital full body asymmetry and the problems that people suffering from this face in their life, right from discrimination, body shaming, bullying to self-doubt and issues with living with an unbalanced body. Zalla’s fight to live with full body asymmetry brought tears to my eyes. Her ability to sense lies also makes her a target and despite all this, she is hardworking and honest. A character that won my respect, I love Zalla Bennbett. She is real, relatable, flawed, has made mistakes in her life and yet, she is good at heart and willing to make amends.

The author also touches on sensitive issues like workplace harassment, blackmail, discrimination, drugs, the hardships of Cancer patients and their families, the sacrifices that law enforcement officers make, childhood abuse and their after effects on human psyche, parental negligence, failure of the justice system in saving children from abuse, and the loopholes in the justice system that lets criminals slip through the cracks.

Conclusion:

All in all, in one word, this book was just WOW!

This is a gripping read full of twists and turns. A dark, dangerous, and ingenious plot that will not let you put the book down, I was spell bound throughout and loved Zalla so much. This thriller will test your sense of right and wrong, exercise your brain, and then while breaking your heart also leave a sense of satisfaction that in the end everything is well. This book sets the base for the upcoming books in this series and I am so eager to read them. The end will leave you intrigued and excitedly waiting for Zalla’s next adventure.

5 out of 5 super shiny stars to The Unknown Man by Natalie Hanson and Njkinny recommends this mystery/thriller book to everyone.
