Meant as an offering for God Kal Bhairav, finding the missing wine bottle is imperative. Then there is an ambitious woman from Myanmar who has lost her twelfth class certificates while on her way to a prestigious college in Delhi for admission. Finding her certificates are vital for fulfilling her dreams of serving her country. Blue Eagle by Sharada Kolluru Book Review:

Things I loved about Blue Eagle by Sharada Kolluru:

I fell in love with the characters and found myself immersed in the stories, feeling the varied emotions felt by them in the stories. Neil’s happy and contained life in Cortona with his mother and then his sudden falling out with her that broke both their hearts had me feeling sad and itching to make them reconcile with each other!

Favourite Quote from Blue Eagle by Sharada Kolluru:

“Sometimes in life, there arises a situation where nobody but the person at the crisscross will have to decide. One needs to trust his instincts.”

Blue Eagle by Sharada Kolluru Quote said by Neil’s mother to him.

Then Moe’s story starting three generations back with her grandfather who dreamed of living in a free country and died fighting for one to her own ambition to study in India and then serve her country, Myanmar, had me fighting tears and feeling heartbroken for the millions of people who lost their lives and who are still losing their lives everyday trying to free their nation!

Favourite Quote from Blue Eagle by Sharada Kolluru:

“Things are going to change. We, the people of the country, are bringing change generation after generation. Change is on its way, let’s not stop.”

Blue Eagle by Sharada Kolluru Quote said by Moe’s grandmother to her mother.

The plot is well-researched, full of interesting historical and other fun facts that make the story more interesting, and beautifully executed. The author has done her research on the history of Myanmar, the daily lifestyle of people there, and the present situation of the country. She also knows her wines and the wine making process as well as the importance of wines in the lives of people in Italy.

Favourite Quote from Blue Eagle by Sharada Kolluru:

The belief in Italy is, a husband and wife don’t fight when they have lavender plants at home.”

Blue Eagle by Sharada Kolluru Quote about a popular belief in Italy.

Incredible India is also shown in technicolour right from the hustle-bustle of New Delhi to the rustic beauty of the small villages in Madhya Pradesh. The subtle and artistic mixing of facts and fiction make the world building of this story one of the best aspects of this book. I can’t stop gushing about the virtual tours I got to Myanmar, India and Italy that felt so real and had me feeling every single brush of the wind against my cheeks!

Favourite Quote from Blue Eagle by Sharada Kolluru:

Italy, with its bewitching culture, splendid Renaissance art and architecture, alluring gastronomy and strikingly beautiful landscape, is thousands of years deep in existence, like a temptress whose discovery has no end.”

Blue Eagle by Sharada Kolluru Quote about Italy.

I sat hooked and engrossed right from the start and till the end!

The narration is fluid, simple and vivid. With the chapters short and the narrative easy, I could visualize each settings and the switch from one setting to the next, from the past to the present with ease and clarity. The suspense behind the missing wine bottle and the missing school certificates had me on edge. The various clues the author throws for the wine bottle and the character studies along the way will interest you as well as exercise all your brain cells!

So many types of love and romance are shown in this book. The love for one’s country, the one for freedom, the gentle as waves and yet lasting a lifetime and beyond love that Moe’s grandfather had for his wife, the enduring and patient romance that her father had with his wife, the strong age-no-bar romance that Neil’s mother had with her lover, and then the companionable, supportive romance of Moe and Neil. I sat enraptured as I followed through life journeys of people from different times, different cultures, and different aspirations.

Favourite Quote from Blue Eagle by Sharada Kolluru:

“For anybody in this world the biggest gift is his or her freedom. However, here in Rangoon, under the rule of the military junta, having that freedom is a fantasy. But within the four walls of my house, I shall respect the freedom of Sarayu and I will make sure she fulfills whatever her dreams are with dignity and choice.”

Blue Eagle by Sharada Kolluru Quote from the scene where Moe’s grandfather seeks her grandmother’s hand in marriage from her parents.

The connections the author makes between the characters who see so disconnected but are in reality all part of one framework is stunning.

Neil and Moe’s lost belongings bring them together as they try and help each other with their quests, they also get closer to each other. With humour, detective fiction, history, love, loss, and hidden connections thrown in, this book is a gripping read from start to finish.

Favourite Quote from Blue Eagle by Sharada Kolluru:

“The toughest are the initial days, Neil. Later, we get used to the situation we are in,”

Blue Eagle by Sharada Kolluru Quote said by Moe to Neil.

The ending is a logical and satisfactory finish with no only a happy closure but also one with a moral. I want to know what happens next to Moe and Neil and hope we get another chapter in their story in the form of a book soon!

Favourite Quote from Blue Eagle by Sharada Kolluru:

They observed the sparkle in each other’s eyes as they stalled there in some unknown colony in a foreign country. A man from Italy and a girl from Myanmar. The universe watched them and thought, let me relax for a while now that I have brought these two people together. To conspire something between them or not, can be decided a few days later.”

Blue Eagle by Sharada Kolluru Quote about Neil and Moe’s love story.

Things that could have been better:

Firstly, this book should have had a glossary for all the non-English phrases, words and sentences used throughout the book.

Secondly, the usage of words like “Dude”, “girl”, “bro” as well as the ambiguous words used in one of the sex scenes felt presumptuous and odd. However, they are part of a small portion in the book so don’t hamper the overall enjoyment but still the author needs to work on this.

Life is an exciting business and most exciting when it is lived for others…” -Helen Keller

Blue Eagle by Sharada Kolluru Quote

Conclusion:

All in all, Blue Eagle by Sharada Kolluru is a book that combines entertainment, stellar settings, enlightening history, a family saga of love, loss, and commitment to a cause, varying shades of love and human connections, humour, suspense, and a happy ending that will leave you smiling, satisfied and hopeful of a bright tomorrow. 4.5 out of 5 stars to this stunning book that held me captive throughout and left me wanting to gush about this book that is now a definite Njkinny favourite to everyone, Njkinny recommends this romance with history and suspense to everyone.
