It Ends With a Dream by Medha Nagur Review

It Ends With a Dream: The Farther You Go, The Closer We Get by Medha Nagur is a heartbreaking, raw and poignant love story of Yadnya and Yashika. Yadnya dreams of becoming the youngest politician in India, and Yashika’s dream is to open a hospital to nurture the poor mothers-to-be and unite them safely with their newborn angels. Every thing about them is different. While Yashika is vivacious, outspoken, and friendly, seeing the bright side of everything and measuring life as only black and white, Yadnya’s past has already made him wary, distrustful of others, reticent. He sees life as a combination of shades of gray.

Despite all their differences, they fall in love. But is love sufficient to overcome years of doubts, fears, distrust, and indifference?

I got attracted towards this book because of the intriguing title that had me thinking all sorts of questions and supplying all sorts of reasons why the book was named so. However, I am glad to say in the end, I was pleasantly surprised!

My heart cried for young Yadnya who experienced indifference from a young age. With no one loving him and giving him the care he yearned for, he was forced to become a “tedious boy” who saw people constantly breaking his heart, shattering his expectations, and never making him feel safe. Yashika’s entry in his life came like a pleasing burst of rainbow colours bringing with it positivity, happiness, and friendship.

Again and again Yadnya and Yashika meet and then are forced to separate. Though their love for each other remains the same, their inner demons, insecurities, and familial expectations stand in their way. Though later at one point he realises his mistake but is it too late?

Little Yadnya at nine had no choice but to follow his parents out of her house. The teenage Yadnya was spooked by his own beliefs. He had walked out from her life even without a word of goodbye to her. Yadnya at 21, too serious about his participation in political affairs, had managed to scare her away from his life. Forever. And that was the biggest mistake of his life.”

There is this push and pull throughout the story and the author expertly takes the readers through the protagonists’ lives starting from childhood to adulthood. Every decision has consequences and this is what the author shows with each decision these two take at every stage of their lives that forges their journey ahead. I was intrigued by the secret that both Yadnya and Yashika’s families are keeping about his past and while I had an inkling about what it would be, I was still surprised.

“…his fear had overpowered his love; the fear of staining his image with a soupy relationship and therefore the fear of offending his dear Nana.”

IT ENDS WITH A DREAM BY MEDHA NAGUR QUOTE

For a debut author, Medha Nagur’s writing style is simple and fluid. She managed to create a vivid picture in my mind and I travelled to places like the beautiful Coorg and bustling Hyderabad through this book. However, at times her narration rambled and she repeated the same facts again and again at several places that could have been curtailed. Also several regional language phrases have been used in the story that would be better understood by readers not speaking that language through a glossary that should be included in the book.

I also encountered a few grammatical errors that can be rectified with another round of editing.

Should you read It Ends With A Dream by Medha Nagur?

Yes, you should!

I enjoyed reading this Indian love story that is unlike any that I have read in a long time. It is complex, raw, maze-like in its journey and then bittersweet in its ending. I smiled, cried, got frustrated, and felt a plethora of emotions but sat engrossed until the end that left me wanting more and wailing like a madwoman.

This book taught me the valuable lesson that sometimes it is too late to go back and change the past. We can only learn from our mistakes and move forward. Life is too short to wait for the perfect moment to express our heart’s desire.

Erich Segal once said in his novel that- Love means you never have to say sorry. But in reality, an apology can fix many things. No matter how much a person understands love, expressing feelings was important. It was not enough to just say sorry but also to say I love you…”

All in all, if you are looking for an intense, emotionally rich, conscience testing, beautiful, realistic love story with both thorns and roses, then this book is for you. It is a clean romance and Njkinny recommends it to all readers. 4 out of 5 shiny stars to It Ends With a Dream by Medha Nagur and I look forward to reading lots more from this talented new author in the future.
