Twice Shy by Sarah Hogle is romance novel with heart. A book that not only entertains but also digs deep into our emotions, I absolutely adored this love story.

Two characters with traumatic pasts and debilitating social anxiety find that there is still good in this world. 

Maybell’s character had me tearing up, then getting frustrated, and then cheering her. With a childhood that brought only unhappiness, and a present that isn’t any better, she still dreams of a happy future. It is sad, and in the same way hopeful.

I get nervous about communicating with them because they don’t know me yet, and they don’t know the issues I have…m putting all my energy into trying to present myself as normal, which I get into my head about. Whether it’s real or not, I can’t stop imagining that they’re judging me. Which makes it worse. My mind goes blank, and I just . . . can’t find the words. I freeze up. It’s mortifying when the words won’t come…so much easier to pretend I have a personality where I don’t have any words for anyone, that I don’t care to, rather than not being able to find them.”

While I loved her and empathised with her, sometimes I just wanted to shake her out of her dreams, and urge her to do something to make them real. So, when she stays put and takes Wesley’s grumpiness, I jumped in joy!

Wesley had me loving him right from the start. He is a man with hidden depths and a heart of gold. I loved how he and Maybell slowly come closer and their journey to developing their relationship, and healing each other’s hurts had me sniffling in joy.

I also adored how the author managed to engross me in the story and beautifully told the love story without using explicit intimate scenes.

The insight into Aunt Violet warmed my heart, and it was such a trip down memory lane to see a strong woman who loved with all her heart, and who even in death showed her care for two lost souls.

I am also intrigued by Wesley’s family and so want to meet them. His brothers sound so interesting and it would be so great if we get their story too. Plus, it will also mean meeting Wesley again. So, a win all around!

The last part is especially splendid and how they uplifted, supported, and paved way for each other’s dreams is so well done. I absolutely adored the last scene which is my favourite.
